Hi Guys, I have a somewhat old Dell laptop - the Inspiron 1521:

I know its a long shot trying to get it fixed, may be UTR, or getting parts miight be an issue, but Im willing to try, I'm a little attached to it :-)

In any case, It had a RAM problem before and I fixed it by reseating the chip in Memory Bank B (bottom of the PC, Bank A is under the keyboard). It acted up again, but this time reseating the memory didn't work - Caps lock light on the keyboard was just flashing and it would not boot. I assumed that the RAM must be bad, so I asked the desktop support guys at my workplace if they had any DDR2 RAM chips lying about. They gave me two to try, but Im still not sure if these were the correct chips...because when I installed them, nothing happened and the Caps lock was not flashing anymore. Googled and tried a few things, including resetting the BIOS, performing a couple of procedures, along the lines of taking the battery out, plugging the charger in and trying to boot, nothing. Took it to a PC repair shop, and the guy reckons he thinks its the motherboard - the other RAM I tried might have burnt it.

Does anybody have suggestions on what I can try next? And if indeed it is the motherboard, where can I get spares this old?

Any help will be appreciated :)

Don't give up. I would start with checking your memory modules in different laptop. To make sure that memory is good. You might also need to replace thermal compound on the CPU. I would start from this, as laptop is 8 years old, it will also fix eventual contact problems. Download service manual from Dell and follow dissassembly instruction.
