Speakers and headphones

Please pardon my ignorance on the esteemed group.

Ok I plug my green headphone outlet into the "green" speaker socket and my orange (Mic) into the orange and when I listen to say utube I can hear though the headphones and yet the speaker are still giving out sound. What am I doing wrong?. If I change the volume it reduces the sound on both.

Are you on Vista by chance? Microsoft messed up a little there imho, you now need to go into your Sound Settings [Control Panel] and make your headphones the default sound device, close your apps, open them again and then it will play through the correct device properly.

In XP it happened automatically...

No I am on XP.. I assumed that with the headphones it would automatically cut out the speakers

Are you using Realtek drivers.

I think if i remember correctly theres an option in the Realtek sound setup to automatically disable the speakers when headphones are plugged in.
The other option is to allow 2 audio streams to play simultaneously through 2 separate outputs, like headphones and speakers. So it might be that you have that activated and need to enable the other function.
