Hi fellow friends

Need some advice on buying a speaker system. I'm goning to be honest with you, I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING about speakers.

Proposed use will be...
Mostly listening to music. (Original CD's {Anything actually... currently stuff like Parlies, AKing, Heuwels Fantasties, Prime Circle but many other...}, copied CD's, Downloaded and High Quality ripped mp3's)
Now and then watching movies (very seldom rented DVD's, Mostly Movies downloaded from either Torrents or NZB's :o)

What do I need? 2.1 or 5.1???

Willing to fork out about R4k, but ANY suggestions will do. Spare money could be put towards a few cases of beer.

Currently looking at Logitech z-5500 just because I don't know anything else.

Cheers

Maybe just a suggestion on a DVD player that will do the above job...don't want to spend to much here though.

Logitech Z-5500 - 5.1 THX / DTS / Dolby Digital / 500 W RMS
Yes get them!

Z-5500 are the best you can get. They have optical in as well.

For music 2.1 is much better because 5.1 cds are few and far between.

you can probably get much better advice for speakers over at head-fi
http://www.head-fi.org/

they give very good advice in general.

If you don't need a 5.1 system as a necessity you can probably get a decent 2.1 system with DAC and amp for your budget.

Ive had the 5500's since they got the first shipment at Computer Mania MANY moons ago.
Still PUMPING everyday. Not one single complaint...
Used for my XBOX, PS3 and the trusty old PC.

They are WELL worth the money i promise you!

+10000 for all voting on Logitech Z-5500. I've had the Logitech Z-680 system (the previous Z-5500) for the past 8 years and still use it everyday without any complaints.

Z-2300 if you want 2.1. I prefer 2.1 because I mainly listen to music and I like less clutter.

Will the following DVD Player be OK to play my CD's or music?
Absolutely.
Do I need an amplifier??... Clearly I know NOTHING!
If you buy a set of PC speakers like Z5500's then no, they have a built-in amplifier. Same if you buy active Monitor speakers, or any speaker which says "active". Regular speakers or speakers which are "passive" need an amplifier.

z5500 ftw you can set to 2.1 if you have to, nothing and i mean nothin touch these!!!!

I still maintain a good 2-speaker set, (and I don't even mean 2.1, although a sub is nice too) sounds the best for music listening. 5.1 is better for movies and gaming though.

I am planning on buying two Warfedale bookshelf speakers as i am more interested in listening to music and i have a set of creative speakers for gaming can someone please advise what amplifier i need to get?

If none of the speaker sets have built in amps then your best bet is a stereo hi-fi amp with A + B channels for speakers ( this lets you choose which speakers to drive usually a combination of A or B or A+B). You'll need to check the wattage of your speakers and match your amp to them, though a 25W RMS per channel amp should suffice.

Note: RMS is a better rating than MAX which most speakers are rated in, and in general if the amplifier is rated some astronomical 1000W PMPO with christmas lights all over the face plate then don't even bother with it.

So some good brands to look at are Pioneer, NAD, Sony, Technics and Kenwood.
