Seeing i am only going to use the amp with 15 inch Warfedale bookshelf speakers i do not want to over kill so can someone please recommend a suitable amp that is reasonably priced?

Well I managed to pick up a NAD 3020i (yes it's old but sought after) at cash converters for R900 a few years ago. You really don't need a new amp, a good second hand one will also do.
 
It is funny to run into this thread today!

A friend of mine gave me his old 5.1 setup this weekend. Mission 751 fronts, 760i backs, 75c center, bass bin and Sony amp, all still in VERY good nick.

Let me tell you, it makes a world of difference compared to my cheap old Logitech 2.1 setup. :)

no no no no no, nearfield monitors are the LAST speakers you wanna use for general music listening.... because they were not designed for that purpose!

Oh, well I thought they sound alright. So regular speakers are better for that then?
 
When the term 'monitor speaker' is used among audio engineers, there is likely to be an assumption that the speaker will be designed to produce relatively flat (linear) phase and frequency responses. In other words, there will be no emphasis or de-emphasis of particular frequencies so that the loudspeaker gives an accurate reproduction of the tonal qualities of the source audio ("uncolored" or "transparent" are synonyms), and there will be no relative phase shift of particular frequencies meaning no distortion in sound stage perspective for stereo recordings.

Does anyone have any knowledge of warfedale stereo amps i see hi-fi corp is selling a Warfdale amp for R2399 but my son is friends with the son of one of the MD's so might be able to get it a bit cheaper, but i have no knowledge of Warfedale amplifiers.

Hahaha! Agreed.

I wonder if the OP found something that he liked. I'd agree with getting an AMP and a decent pair of stereo speakers, unless a sub is important enough to warrant 2.1. For downloaded stuff, there's not much that warrants getting surround now IMO

Agreed... no set of amplified speakers can match a decent stereo amp and speakers... good mid range speakers... Jamo or Kev if you have money to spend JBL or BA amp wise go to cash converters get a second hand stereo Yamaha, Marantz, NAD something along those lines.. you will be blown away...

If you are intending listening to cd's do yourself a favor take a cd with and listen to the difference a proper CD player (you can get a entry level marantz for about 2-3k) makes DVD players are not good CD players at all.

There is are two Nad 3020 amps advertised on Gumtree one for R1600 and one for R1200 and also a nad 302 are their prices to high?
