Spectacle prices

Dude you drive a Porsche...what's the problem paying a few grand for specs?

Great video thanks.
I wonder if the same applies to lenses.

Yeah it's an eye opener.

As far as lenses are concerned my optometrist advised me to go for proper glass with a coating rather than plastic and I'm not regretting it.He also wasn't as expensive as some of the JHB based optometrists but he's based in Vereeniging. My polo frames came out to around R2500 with lenses etc.

Lol.
How do you think people become wealthy?

Sure sure.

But in the greater scheme of things this isn’t really all that crazy or unreasonable.

And not something to take shortcuts with.

The entire glasses and lens industry is controlled by one company in Italy. That is why everything is so expensive, its a monopoly.

Already explained.

Luxotticca only controls the frames, absolutely not the lenses which would be Essilor.

And still Essilor controls only 25% of the market.

Apparently it's gotten even worse since this was made...(same video above for those who have watched it already)

The minimum you will get away with, is ~R660 per M/F lens. But then you are getting the cheapest M/F the optometrists can source. Exactly the type of lens we avoid like the plague.

Well, delay in mine is because one of the lenses was faulty, and it comes from overseas, so hopefully that means it's not a no-name brand...

Ok, found out that the lens are Verilux Physio multi-focals. Don't seem to be one of the main brands you were mentioning?

"In January 2017, Luxottica announced a merger with Essilor to be completed by mid-2017, resulting in combined market capitalization of approximately €46 billion.[7] The combined entity will command more than one quarter of global value sales of eyewear.[8]"

Exact same thing on Essilor page.....Complete mono.

The best lenses from my experience are Zeiss.
Currently have the Varilux S lenses only because i wanted Green Transition coloured lenses.

It happens quite regularly. Personally I avoid essilor. Like the plague they are. I need to use that word less. We order essilor lenses via a 3rd party lab if the need arises.

Unfortunately that is like saying that Samsung are the best phone manufacturers. You get so many different models and designs and everyone is different in the end.

By curiosity why ?

I have Essilor shares.

Was just quoted R3100 per multifocal lense. Includes anti reflex and hard coat. Could this be right?

Was quoted R12k at Specsavers in January.... They love to be pushy, not the optometrist but the salesman who they hand you off to. They came with 3 different figures on what the Medical aid would cover, only just before I signed I noticed that the medical aid was paying far less than they said they would ! Whent to another "independent" practice in the same shopping center, Oakley frames, Hoya "progressive lenses" photochromatic, all the coatings for just less than R7k, medical aid paid in full. Specsavers "get one free" is nonsense and Torga optical "own lenses" are cheap and go yellow after a while. It's a major racket.

More than likely Medical Aid didn’t pay much of anything and it just comes out of your MSA.

Depending on which plan you are on of course.

family used use specsavers. We didn't get any extras as 2 expensive.
Changed to Leon De Vos, Durban North.
Excellent service and prices.
Finally got transitions. 1200 both lenses. Specsavers gave me a quote of 1800 per lense.
