The basic "regulated" price is R1234 and anti reflex is an additional ~R635 that has a hard coat added onto it as a matter of course. That lands you up at R1869 per lens without any extras. R3100 can easily be reached if the lenses are thinner (HRI), branded (Hoya/Zeiss) or if an array of different other factors come into play.
 
Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like as in most things in life, you get what you pay for.

That's crazy, so the big names/franchises are a bit of a con like many retailers are, bargains to bait clients and then rip them off with the prices for the stuff they really need.

Seems the little independent guys are the way to go in terms of better prices, get your eyes tested wherever and then get quotes from a few places for the lenses and frames, making sure you are getting apples for apples quotes.

Nowhere did he confirm he got the exact same stuff for less money.

Just that he got away cheaper.

As this thread has shown there is a massive variation in quality and price between different manufacturers.
