Icasa announces spectrum auction dates

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has issued the final Invitation To Apply (ITA) for the licencing of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) spectrum, also known as high-demand spectrum.

The deadline to apply for licencing of the spectrum is 16:00 on 31 January 2022.

Every time I see this guy's face in an article about Icasa, it's usually followed by another article about incoming litigation

Government: You will bring mobile data prices down!
Networks: we need more spectrum
Government: you can bid on spectrum and pay an annual licence fee.
Networks: OK, how much.
Government: We want R9bil in total.
Networks: OK, we will pass the cost on to the customer.

You can't win, the Government literally charge the cell networks the earth for basically rights to thin air, which costs the government nothing.

ICASA need to get real, make spectrum cheaper, so smaller players can run Networks as well, ICASA should not complain about data prices, when they are charging so much for spectrum.
