Speed camera tech used in SA - what you should know

All of this is utterly useless if there is no enforceable way to serve the fines on motorists... and no follow up.
Motorists in Gauteng owe millions in unpaid fines because the AARTO system is broken.
 
I received a fine with a massive billboard behind my car. According to the article, if they used radar, the fine isn't valid, but it is valid if they used LIDAR. How do I know which they used?
 
The problem is if you query the fine and point out that it was in an illegal spot.. U might get away after a few yrs when it's queried but the rest of the fines for that spot remains.

E.g. I see every week Tshwane Metro using a tripod camera hidden behind a hazard sign & the edge of the bridge albeit the speed sign with radar 1st appearance only happens 500m later. i.e. Completely illegal.. So I tell them the other day and they don't give a ****, take it up if u get a fine otherwise tough for other drivers.

To me it seems there needs to be a major clamp down on metros here in Gauteng as they seem to be out to get a buck and nothing more
 
if they can replace all the camera with Average speed camera's that would be great.

Driving on roads in Cape Town with it, is great. It really gets rid of the massive speed differential between the cars. The fatalities on those roads are down massively.

all other forms of camera's are simply to make money and does nothing for safety.

also, best way to not get fined, is not to speed. getting caught is your fault and your fault alone.

It doesn't remove speed differentials. You still have idiots driving well below the speed limit, who still brake at the cameras, along with other idiots travelling at the speed limit who do the same. This causes a wave of slowing traffic and increases the danger of an accident. You also have people who know they're leaving the road before the second camera, so they can pretty much go at whatever speed they like. There weren't exactly a lot of fatalities in the locations they use the cameras either. Their claims of massive success are dubious at best.
 
Would like to know how these cameras single out the speeding car on a photo when the highway is busy?

There is a third point when using radar that is not mentioned in the article

(iii) no other moving vehicle other than the measured vehicle within 600 metres from the SME in the direction of operation.

Most of the time the fines by lazer can be cancelled due to no clear separation between vehicles.

You may want to have a look at Fields Hill in Durban.. it has improved the traffic flow quite considerably. May not necessarily improve the fatality rate, but that is something that can only be looked at after a period of time.
 
There is another type that they use recently.. not sure what it is exactly, but its a high speed camera, and a big radar patch antenna.

The other day was pulled over for apparently not stopping at a stop street. I did stop, as confirmed by the vehicle telemetry data.
But ja... METRO COP NEED KFC MONEY!

Why u need a dash cam.. then u can say, "please speak loudly and tell me your officer number + show me your badge" while pointing the camera their way. They will disappear immediately. I've done this with my cell which i sometimes run vid mode and the okes swear and bugger off. :D usually at night (i don't trust cops at night)

Thats the one.. i seriously doubt these things are strictly legal. Also, since it is unmarked, i'd love to see where any law prevents me from either picking it up and driving off with it or knocking it over. As far as I'm concerned it is an unattended piece of flimsy equipment laying on the side of the road and if that hits my car, the owner is in for a huge fine aka metro just like everything on the highway btw.. if u put up a board and it hits a car coming lose, u will get a call ;) (in Cpt the council is very strict about objects on the road btw hence i know)

Many times I have contemplated doing this. Back some 15 years I knew some fellows who actually stole the entire speed trap camera. They destroyed it.

The trouble is, they are hiding somewhere, in a tree, or in the bush, not far from the thing, so getting caught is a real possibility. I also wonder if these new generation traps have GPS (they probably do) and can therefore be traced if stolen.

Nope, JHB Metro loves them because they can dump them and watch the money roll in. This is the one on M1 South at Woodmead, I've been caught by the one on the other side of the road.
