Nope, JHB Metro loves them because they can dump them, sit and get stuffed on KFC, while watching the money roll in. This is the one on M1 South at Woodmead, I've been caught by the one on the other side of the road.

Many times I have contemplated doing this. Back some 15 years I knew some fellows who actually stole the entire speed trap camera. They destroyed it.

The trouble is, they are hiding somewhere, in a tree, or in the bush, not far from the thing, so getting caught is a real possibility. I also wonder if these new generation traps have GPS (they probably do) and can therefore be traced if stolen.

Thats usually what they do.. a good couple 100m from the actual camera watching movies or just kinda dozing off. Thing is it can't just be in the yellow line as if you hit it, you have a huge claim against the metro and there is zero protection afforded to them for their equipment as you can easily make a case of not seeing it at night (besides the legal issue of it being in the yellow lane without large reflectors to be visible).

I'd love to see a court case go down where one of these cameras are destroyed because i know theres not much that can be done to the driver unless they can prove he did it on purpose which is subjective. Just make sure to step out of the car and take down the officers number plate etc he will be out of a job the next week. I think it should be taken up though as its a hazard and likely only be changed if some legal action is taken vs metros using these recklessly. Perhaps take pics of illegally placed cams and set to JPSA?

It's another case of the watchers needing a watcher to slap them around.

It doesn't remove speed differentials. You still have idiots driving well below the speed limit, who still brake at the cameras, along with other idiots travelling at the speed limit who do the same. This causes a wave of slowing traffic and increases the danger of an accident. You also have people who know they're leaving the road before the second camera, so they can pretty much go at whatever speed they like. There weren't exactly a lot of fatalities in the locations they use the cameras either. Their claims of massive success are dubious at best.

Transport MEC Robin Carlisle said road fatalities on the monitored N1 stretch fell from 86 in 2011 to 38 in 2012 and 21 so far for this year.

That road was called the "road of death".

As for the speed differential, I think the massive drop in death toll speaks for itself. Speed differential is a serious cause of accidents. Not the people slowing down at the camera, its the poeple cruising at 160km/h past the people going 80km/h. The cameras at least half that differential now.
