Hi VC,

I know there are several factors influencing this, and am sure there can be some logical explanation:

I find that when using HSDPA and testing the link using speedtest.net, the results are as follows:
Local Link - Download: ~1.4Mbps, Upload: ~340kbps
International Link (USA and Europe): Download: ~1.4Mbps, Upload ~38kbps

Why is the upload speed to international servers so much slower than the local servers? I expect a difference, but the difference between the local upload and international upload seems to high?

Any ideas?

Thanks and happy 2009!

To be honest I think your connection 'broke' during that international upload test. 38kb/s is obviously not correct and I've seen my modem do this sometimes.

Have you seen this behavior over a number of tests? Also, did you do the 2 tests back-to-back?

If you see it again won't you disconnect, reconnect and re-run the test immediately and let me know?

In the meantime, which modem and APN are you using?

Can anyone else confirm if they get stupidly low uplink speeds from time to time? Modem?

HI V3G,

Did some tests from Pretoria

Using a Novatal Merlin U740 Modem on the unrestricted APN:
To Germany (Frankfurt): Download ~1.3 Mbps, Upload: ~45 kbps
To UK (London): Download ~520 kbps, Upload: ~110 kbps
To USA (Atlanta): Download ~751 kbps, Upload: ~28 kbps
RSA (Johannesburg): Download ~1.5 Mbps, Upload: ~66kbps

Disconnected and Reconnected and tested again:
To Germany (Frankfurt): Download ~1.2 Mbps, Upload: ~32 kbps
To UK (London): Download ~1.4 Mbps, Upload: ~122 kbps
To USA (Atlanta): Download ~1.3 Mbps, Upload: ~61 kbps
Netherlands (Amsterdam): Download: ~1.45 Mbps, Upload: ~53kbps
RSA (Johannesburg): Download ~1.5 Mbps, Upload: ~300kbps

Diconnected and reconnected to internet APN:
To Germany (Frankfurt): Download ~850 kbps, Upload: ~66 kbps
To UK (London): Download ~800 kbps, Upload: ~64 kbps
To USA (Atlanta): Download ~1 Mbps, Upload: ~63 kbps
Netherlands (Amsterdam): Download: ~1.43 Mbps, Upload: ~66kbps
RSA (Johannesburg): Download ~1.5 Mbps, Upload: ~300kbps

I disconnected and reconnected several times, using a Billion Router and placing the datacard in my PC - download results remain the same, with upload results varying from the occasional good one to mostly bad.
Seems downloads are ok, but uploads are bad. Maybe someone else in Pretoria East area is having the same issues?

Anyone in the general area will use the same route to the internet, so they should see the same results as you.

Anyone who can test that's within the same general PTA area?

MM, how easy is it to get your paws on a USB modem and test? (Just a hunch...;))

If have some information that a user in PTA North using the same datacard has the same issues wrt upload speeds.

Unless VC is kind enough to lend me a USB modem, I guess my paws will have to dig into my pocket in order to get a feel for the USB modem. Are there differences between the datacard and the USB modem wrt to upload speeds?
