Hi all

So check this mail from Vodacom, how accurate is this information? What if someone only uses WiFi to access the internet?

Backstory: Speed test results from a 100mb line: 0.95 down 11.8 up. After reboot: 16 down 20 up

"Thank you for taking the time to make contact with us. Unfortunately the speed test provided below cannot be used as it was done over WIFI.
Could you please provide us with a speedtest on the following link:
http://iperfcfo.vodasecure.co.za/
Cape Town
Please be advised that your speed test has to be done from a computer that is directly connected to the router via lan cable.
Test`s done via Wifi will not provide conclusive results as there are other factors influencing Wifi connectivity/speed.
The query will go into a closed not resolved status: Please send speedtest:
• via email with the SR Reference in the subject to ftth.technical@vodacom.co.za or;
• please contact 0821904 Free from Vodacom Cellphone
Regards"

So alex, as Vodacom say there are many issues with Wi-Fi, but if the equipment you are using is good enough, you will get the correct speeds,
1) What router are you using
2) what device are you using
3) what Wi-Fi band are you using
4) were is the speed test site you are testing to
5) how far away from the router are you when you test.

The attached test is done via 5Ghz Wi-Fi about 2m from the router 709511

1 - Don't know the model number but I know its a Huawei Router that was supplied to us
2 - Samsung Galaxy S10+
3 - 2.4 GHz (Disabled the 5GHz band)
4 - Cape Town
5 - About 4-5m away from the router with nothing in-between

Just feel like these guys are making an excuse, the speed is crap and its not because im on WiFi

Wifi adds too much of a variable.
Their attitude is understandable.

Why on earth would you disable the 5Ghz band? If anything. Disable 2.4 and get more mesh / access points.

2.4Ghz has 3 usable bands out of 11 being shared with everything including your cordless phones and maybe even a cordless mouse. It’s beyond congested. So yes, Vodacom are right saying you need to test with a LAN cable.

The thing is it usually always is WiFi related. So sending a WiFi speedtest to an isp will solicit that response. If you test with LAN, they can then start trying to figure out why you’re struggling with speed. It could be the router/onu, last mile, backhaul or even their network - but WiFi makes it impossible to know.

Update: Ran speed test again using WiFi and LAN. Same result of +- 50 down and 16 up.

For longer range...

Stop dicking around and test with a cable.
I did not say I'm not going to use a cable, was just wondering what that ISP would do should someone only use wireless devices

Anyways, lets see what Vodacom does from here.

but slower speeds - still no reason to disable 5 - have both on and use which ever one works wherever you are.

Too much interference on wireless every ISP will tell you to do a test on LAN

Anyways, lets see what Vodacom does from here.
They will tell you to ensure nothing else is connect on the network, when doing a speed test.
They will expect you to ensure no variables are the issue on your side before assuming the issue is them

I would disable wifi (both 2.4 and 5) and make sure nothing else is connected to the router except the PC you are doing a speed test on.

Yes I turned off all WiFi devices and ran the test via LAN. Its around 50 down now, better but not 100mb speeds. They will look into the issue. So yea, lets hope its resolved. Was just really curious how they will only accept a speed test result over LAN because not everyone has access to a PC with LAN.
