Hi all

I would like to know how this so called speed test is done - seems to me that the company that offers the speed test is probably sponsoring this website???

Generally these types of speed tests are a load of bull****

Hi Douw

I can guarantee you that this site is not sponsored by anybody and will remain a place for ADSL users to meet and share ideas. We have been contacted by various companies looking at advertising an sponsorships, but we can still manage to pay for this site ourselves and it will therefore remain add free and completely impartial. It is in our interest to have impartial testing on this site, and that is exactly what this speed test is.

I am certain you will realize that we are not out to discredit anybody that is delivering a good service, but would like to bring the truth out in the open. You will see this from the user’s postings.

It is good news that the site will remain add free - but - still I don't know how you guys are performing the speed tests? How is it done?

Hi again Douw

They calculate the download time of a medium sized image from a very fast location. The source code for this test is freely available.

I still have to question the accuracy of this test:

I have just run the test on a 2MB leased line which is currently utilised at 4% and the report I get was 308kbit/s??? Looks a bit incorrect.

Hi Douwg,

I can vouch for the test's accuracy.

I run iptraf independently to measure my real bandwidth usage and also to see my real access speed. I can assure you the test is a good real-world indicator that agrees with my own very accurate measurements.

Much more serious though, is my finding that Telkom's bandwidth measurements are rather inaccurate.

I think avery adsl user should be seriously checking up on the bandwidth reports they receive.

You want speedtests? Go get them here:

Nobody said it was a scientific measurement, but it gives you a very good idea of whether you are getting around 10% (I start complaining big time) of what you should be getting or closer to 80% (I don't complain).
