Constable Johannes Ramalope of the VIP protection unit has been found guilty of culpable homicide but won't go to jail after being given a suspended two-year sentence.

Ramalope was part of a police convoy on 12 June 2008 when his vehicle ploughed into 20-year-old Kyle Harris's Toyoto Tazz in Roodepoort, killing him instantly.

Magistrate Mothilall Bissessar said that Ramalope had driven at high speed and had failed to slow down when he approached the intersection - which was red for him, reports The Star.

Magistrate Bissessar said that despite his heart telling him that Ramalope should go to jail, he ruled that it was an accident, according to the newspaper report.

Since when is speeding and running a red light an accident?

So you receive a "get out jail free card" if the person you are transferring in the convoy is politically well connected?

and a 20 year old is killed "murdered" imagine what his family must be feeling - knowing his killer is not getting what he deserves, I hope his family pursue this further if they can - life is cheap in Africa as they say!

just more proof that this ANC government permit and promote murder. But we all knew they were murderers before they even got into power.

Accident according to newspaper report? So we trust journalists to investigate our accidents now for a court of law?

That is bull****, even when responding to a alpha complaint you have to slow down and check at any interchange before proceeding.

I have a brilliant idea, why dont they just close the VIP unit, since they seem to be at the heart of +/- 90% of all complaints against the police.

If Vip protection is need then just members of the STF (only for real VIPs not every tom dick and mavu)

I'm sure there will be an appeal... A sane judge will send this man to the tjoekie.
