Pretoria - A man was killed and a female police officer was critically injured when a car crashed into them in Pretoria on Saturday, paramedics said.

"Police pulled over a vehicle and while the driver and the officer were talking another car crashed into them," Netcare911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said.

He said when paramedics arrived at the scene in Lynnwood Road around 05:30 the driver had already died. The officer suffered critical injuries and was stabilised at the scene and rushed to the Netcare Pretoria East Hospital.

[-]We received feedback from Lt Col Solomons (Garsfontein Station Commander) that the police officer died due to the injuries she sustained (about an hour or two ago).[/-]
The vehicle that ran them down had been speeding.

Uhm.... got some new news.
Seems the lines got crossed somehow. It was Netcare911 that said that the cop had died in the hospital. Col Solomons just confirmed that she is still alive.

I obviously don't know what happened here, but I have witnessed the police engaging in seriously reckless behaviour when pulling people off, also doing so in very dangerous locations where oncoming vehicles would be unsighted.

That said, condolences to families and friends.

This was a straight stretch of road. The Garsfontein station has always been pretty adamant about safety.

Accepted, but I would wish that all police officers are careful about this.

Actually, the worst offenders are the Joburg Metro Police, but they are hopeless in general.

Was the officers in their car? Must be if she alive and the driver dead.?

So sad.
I had it where a officer jumped if front of me recklessly. Something could have just caught my eye or broke my concentration and I would have run over the officer. I was not speeding, it was a routine check.

They pulled the car over and that driver got out afaik, as well as the police officers.
I will get some info from the guys tonight.

Okay, news from the hospital:
The cop is in surgery atm and the injuries are very severe. The prognosis is not good.

Apparently they were able to arrest the driver in question - over the legal alcohol limit. Heard it on the 13:00 news bulletin.

Obviously it was alcohol, very difficult to crash on a straight road sober haha, amazing how people just blame the cops straight away. Considering how poor our roads are the first reaction is it's the cops fault eh wily?

Who blamed the cop's? What an very big IDIOTIC comment. Are you always this round about @rse type of person??

Read the comments in News24, plenty blaming them (they are thumbed down by the voters though)...

News24 comments are always..... horrible. One guy saying "Another pork banger bites the dust!!!"
