Hey all
(hope this is the right section for this)

Sold a vw fox I owned in 2008 to another bloke.
Recently on my STD bank online banking I noticed a fine has been issued to me from that vehicle.
So he has not changed it over to his name, and I am an idiot i know.
I do not have any paperwork to prove I sold the car to him.
Cant find it tbh.

So what will be the best thing to do regarding this fine?
Oh the fine was issued in 2008 about 3 months after I sold it to him fyi.

Cheers
Satt

The question is if the car was sold in 2008 how the hell has the license been updated year after year?

Either way at the very least you should renounce ownership of the car by de-registering it from your name as KhoisanX pointed out.

Oh it was issued in 2008? In that case I believe it is already null and void if they have not issued you with a summons.

No, but to transfer the car now, the license fees for the last 5 years + penalties will be payable. Its gonna be a fair amount of cash.

Honestly, what I would do is get a new logbook, pay the license fee then scrap the vehicle.

Just be careful though.

I scrapped a car a few months back and sold it as scrap. I got a fine in the post for the scrapped vehicle a few weeks back. I still have the documentation showing I scrapped the car way before the traffic violation occurred.

is it a mission to scrap a car. I sold a car 2 years back and they never finalised the transfer and I still get the documentation for the car. but car is registered in GP and I stay in KZN can I do it here in KZN?

You should be able to do it anywhere.... its only relicensing that could be a problem.

Thanks for all the replies gents.

Ok so how do I go about renouncing ownership/de-registering it?
FYI I do not have any paperwork for this vehicle anymore, only thing I have is the plate number to be honest.

Thanks in advance, again
:o

I have a similar problem. We sold my VW Fox (1990 model) and gave the guy the paperwork to register is, which he has not done. In fact he still owes us R1000 for the vehicle. When I called the post office, I was told I need the registration papers in order to deregister the vehicle. This costs about R650. So if you have proof the car was yours, you get the registration papers and can then de-register the car.
Our problem was that we had just paid for the registration papers as they had gone missing! So now we have to go back and pay again.
I would assume that if you have proof that you sold the vehicle before the fine, then they may let you off, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Well its like 5 years ago, after moving last year I binned alot of old crap.
I bought the car in PE lol.
Only thing I have left of this car is photo.
Guess ill just "forget" about it...

Never just forget about stuff, rather try sort it out properly - these things have a nasty habit of coming back and biting you when you least expect it and with the new Traffic tactics - it will bite hard!

Sounds like the fine itself is invalid.

You also shouldn't hesitate to lay charges against any Metro/Traffic police morons who attempt anything silly.

Seems a bit silly unless the person wanting to deregister the vehicle is not the listed owner. Otherwise it should only be necessary to prove your identity.

A burning question....
How did the fine appear on your bank statement??
