Speeds

I have experienced the same, I have a 192k DSL and my ISP is ISDSL.
My modem reports 320 down and 192 up and I used to get arround 30 - 35kB/s sometimes a little more.
Now I get a sustained 19kB/s flat on a ftp from ftp.is.co.za which equates to 21kB/s line util. And on a upload I get the same 19kB/s.

I borrowed a friends SAIX account and get the exact same from ftp.saix.net.

I phoned Telkom, they checked my port on the DSLAM and all was well.
I asked if they have intruduced any new configs lately and I got the typical answer of NO and they will only investigate if you get less than 15kB/s on their speed test.

IMHO we now get what payed for even if it's overpriced.

Rabie.

If this is the case then uploads should be limited to 64kbps = 8kBps right? Since the 192 package states that it's 64k up. So why are uploads going at at the same speed as downloads? The point is that if they were able to provide 256k speeds all this time then why suddenly start providing 160k speeds when they can clearly gaurantee 192k speeds. Why is everyone suddenly limited to 20kB/s downloads?

I don't believe this "get what you pay for" and "best effort" crap. Best effort means they'll be able to provide 192k speeds which may vary from individual to individual i.e. some people may get less but some should get 192k. Therefore the speeds should vary from person to person. However here we are where everybody is capped at 160k. Coincidence? I don't know about you guys but in my book that's neither "best effort" nor "get what you pay for". This is clearly deliberate. Is that what people call best effort where everybody is capped at 20kB/s? No my friends, thats deliberate.

Exactly the point!!

if beofre their 'best-effort' was 30K down and around 20k up (which is what i was getting off my 192k line) then to cut everyone to 20k down, and sometimes still 20k up, clearly has nothing to do with the best effort idea. ie that they are doing their best and cannot provide a better service. They clearly can.

Whilst it is true that ISPs all over the world can never guarantee to run at full speed all the time, telkom have demonstrated that they CAN provide 24k speeds( which is what we all paid for) but are just unwilling to. This is unacceptable AFAIAC.

But telkom know, as the generally apathy of many users on this forum has shown, that noone will do anything about it. We will all just sit back and take it. So , as a profit-maximizing company , why not do it?!

If this were a decent country with decent dsl, then a few kbs here and there would not really make much difference. I mean if we were all suddenly getting 115k instead of 120k off our 1mbit lines or whateven then we wouldnt really mind, but at such SLOW speeds, 10k really makes a big difference!

yesterday my line worked and today it doesn't even wan't to connect to google's web page? and online games wtf

just morning i reconnected got a new ip and tada its fast again @ line speed or 20kB/s. Gonna check when i get home again. But yah its true what you say, at low speeds a 10kB/s makes a big difference.
