Can anybody tell me how the whole speedtest thing is supposed to work. I have a 4 meg Business uncapped with Afrihost and get good speeds after hours .................. 350 to 430 k/s. When i do a daytime speedtest it only registers around 250 to 300 k/s.

Is the speedtest supposed to give me an indication of my line speed i have installed and paid for or only the speed of the moment depending on the amount of load on the line at the time of the test.

e.g http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2846651325

regards

Also, the ISPs aren't stupid, they know which IPs belong to speedtest and those will get higher priority on their routing. So your real-life speeds will always be worse than those.

My point is that it is easy for the support agent to say do a speedtest and then blame exchange congestion and a number of other issues.
I actually originally was with Webafrica kept my line with WA and moved my account to Openweb for my own reasons. Then whenever i had a problem the One would blame the other(Telkom,Openweb,Webafrica). So now i decided to take an Afrihost account and move my line there. If i have any issues i know who to call and only need to make one phone call i hope.
The support would try to find any number of reasons why the line is slow. What i have noticed is a trend which is more or less the same on a daily basis

Between 08:00 and 17:00 an average of 200 to 300 is obtainable.....
Then after 17:00 it slowly increases up to full speed after 12:00 midnight and runs full speed @ 423 k/s from 12:00 constantly until 07:45.

This has been the same everyday.

During business hours your traffic is shaped to prioritize their business clients. I'm not sure what is the issue with understanding why it's slower during business hours vs after hours?

Hi There,
Computek is 100% correct. Speedtest is just an indication of how fast the connection is at the time that you do the test.
You can look at it like the N1 freeway. At 7:30 am from Pretoria to Johannesburg it is moving at 30kph on a good day.
at 2am in the morning you could easily go at 120kph and not have a problem

regards

Tim
