So I have this question regarding the traffic cops sitting on a stretch of road where they catch every second person, it's in the middle of no where, no school, no nothing, just farm land. :rolleyes:

Now driving either way there is no speed limit signs 10km in any direction, I stopped and asked them what is the speed limit, they informed me it is 80km/h. :eek:

Is this legal at all with no speed signs?

I went through these document, but didn't see any thing.

Why are you speeding in the first place? And yes, you are supposed to follow the rules and regulations even if no cop is around. I remember as a teenager we used to play the game 'wrong indicator up' and laugh at the faces of old,confused drivers. You turn left but will indicate a right turn. :D I know is stupid and dangerous but so is speeding ! Alternatively you can stop next to a traffic cop and bother/distract him. Sometimes I agree with you - NO LAWS SHOULD EVER BE ENFORCED :D Imagine how much money I will get from the bank downstaires :D Hmmm . . . Should I use my shotgun or my 9mm ?

Is it possible to enter the road without seeing a speed restriction sign? i.e. Is there any intersection between the position of the trap and a speed restriction sign? If so, then the trap is illegal. If not, it probably is legal.

It's a fairly common extortion racket for cops out in the sticks to trap to earn extra income for their local no-horse town. If they're hiding rather than in plain view it's a definite case of swelling their coffers.

There generally are long stretches out in the country with no signs, although when in doubt 80kph is mostly a safe assumption. I had a quick look through the regulations, but did not see anything about the spacing of speed signs.

It's actually worth reading the post first before replying.

In my old car I would have just rammed you at 60kph. Good fun, and I'm sure you'd enjoy it too.

80km per hour in the middle of nowhere is stupid. I'd go out of my mind travelling so slow when the cars available to us are able to go so fast. My vote goes to increasing the national speed limits by 20kmph across the board. Pedestrians must stay on the pavement or cross the road at designated crossings, slow drivers should stay in the slow lane and the fast lane should always give way to someone travelling faster than you. It's common road etiquette.

0-200kmph in 14 sec and 200-0kmph in 4sec- useless in South Africa but so beautiful.

80kmph in the middle of nowhere is ridiculously stupid. Who decided that it should be that in the first place? Point your shotgun or 9mm in their direction Gomario.

@Petrolhead I like your thinking :D I would say - NO rules at all. Imagine how impressed the girls will be by 0-200-0 in 20s flat :D Who needs traffic cops/control? For what? I don't want cops on the road or as a matter of fact, anywhere. I am the Master of my faith, I am the Lord of my soul T. Mc W :D

Seriously dude, please read the post before commenting! Where did I say I was speeding, what do you classify speeding as, what speed? - If there is no sign!

80km/h is just crazy, it's 60km to the next town.

On the first 1km there is a 80km/h sign where there is a squatter camp, then it clears up and they sit 10km further. Between the camp and them there is other roads also joining in.

i think speed limits are based on the type of roads you on. If it is a highway 120, built up areas 60 etc? So 'they' expect you to know this

The rules of the road state that one should not assume that the general speed limit of a particular area applies - 60/residential, 120/freeway, etc.
The speed limit will always be indicated to you.

Here's a specific question for people around Harrismith, in May i came from Harrismith & joined the N3 towards Durban. There were no speed signs (that i saw) so assumed it was 120, now i get a fine for going 119 on a 100 section.
Was I blind & miss a speed sign? It was before Montrose

Okay so on this stretch of road, if driving in a western direction there is a 100km/h road sign 5km before the speed trap. However, they catch people coming from the other way, and from that side there is no speed sign for 20km!!

If the one side says 100km/h, is it applicable for the other side? (open stretch of road)

WTF, so they expect you to look in your rearviewmirror to check the speed sign on the other side of the road?

No. There has to be warnings (with the speed limit) of possible speed enforcement a few km's beforehand.

If they catch you and there's nothing then you don't have to pay

There are 3 Speed Limit categories:
Sauce: http://www.mangaung.co.za/docs/National Road Traffic Act.pdf
59 Speed limit
(1) The general speed limit in respect of-
(a) every public road or section thereof, other than a freeway, situated within an urban area;
(b) every public road or section thereof, other than a freeway, situated outside an urban area; and
(c) every freeway,
shall be as prescribed.

i.e. Urban, Outside Urban and Freeway.

Sauce: http://www.transport.gov.za/projects/arrive/speedkills.html
* Public roads in urban areas - 60 km/h
* Public roads outside urban areas which are not freeways - 100 km/h
* Freeways - 120 km/h

Notice the complete lack of 80 km/h anywhere in all of that.
