Whether you’re just checking in, allowing others to track your progress (using Google Maps)
or calling for help – SPOT gives you a vital line of communication with friends and family when you want it
Emergency assistance when and where you need it.
And since it utilizes 100% satellite technology, SPOT works around the world – even where cell phones don’t.

Perfect to track employees, family, friends in case of loved getting lost
as the case in Knysna, in trouble requiring 911 services or just to say
come fetch me if you are a para glider, glider pilot and you have landed
far from your airfield. Travelling into Africa with little or no cell coverage.

Functional Specifications
SPOT features four key functions that enable users to send messages to friends, family or emergency responders, based upon varying levels of need:

* Alert 9-1-1 – Alert emergency responders to your exact location
o SPOT sends one message every 5 minutes until power is depleted or 911 is cancelled.
Ask for Help – Request help from friends and family in your exact location
o SPOT sends one message every 5 minutes for one hour or until Help is cancelled
Check In – Let contacts know where you are and that you’re okay
o SPOT sends three identical messages to the SPOT service for redundancy. The first of those three messages is delivered.
Track Progress – Send and save your location and allow contacts to track your progress using Google Maps™
o SPOT sends one message every 10 minutes for 24 hours or until SPOT is powered off.

Reply from Spot about when coverage is expected in South Africa by mid 2009

Thanks you for your interest in our SPOT product. Unfortunately we are currently unable to provide the SPOT service in either South or Central Africa. The messages produced by the SPOT product are carried on the Globalstar statellite constellation. This system is a "bent pipe" system meaning the signal goes from the unit on the ground up to a satellite in the area and immediately back down to earth to the nearest Globalstar earth station. From there the signal is connected at the earth station to the local PSTN (for voice and duplex service) and/or the internet (for simplex "one-way" messaging).

Globalstar currently has 26 earth stations positioned around the world for this connectivity. Unfortunately we do not have an earth station deployed in Africa at the current time. We are working on setting up a partnership in South Africa but the earliest we would be able to offer commercial service there is mid 2009. We are currently building a earth station in Nigeria with commercial service expected their (and immediate surrounding countries) lat 1st qtr 2009.

Sorry for the bump, but what is the current status on coverage in South Africa? Will a SPOT device work here?

I've emailed them and they've confirmed that coverage is available in South Africa, including the S.O.S service.

The earth station in Gaborone is up and running and there is now coverage in Sub Saharan Africa. The system is in "friendly test" mode at the moment and is working well.
Products are available in Botswana and will be available in South Africa shortly.
