Spotify reaches 180 million users

Spotify Technology SA gained more subscribers than expected, but it wasn’t enough for investors who are worried about competition from Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.

Spotify boosted its customer base to 180 million in the second quarter, more than the average 178.5 million forecast from analysts.

Maybe if they drop their price they will attract/convert a few more customers.

If someone doesn't value access to nearly all the music in existence at even R60pm then I don't think it's worth any amount to them. The value for money is already extraordinary.

Spotify is certainly right to fear the hell out of the competition. Google and Apple are offering their music streaming as part of a wider value proposition (and are pouring in further investment) and have the huge benefit of bundling their music apps with Android and iPhone respectively. It would be a shame if Spotify eventually went under though as their curated playlists are the best by miles.

Data is a problem.
On premium it allows you to download your playlists for offline listening on 3 devices.

Linked my phone, laptop and wife's phone for that and used WiFi to download our favourite songs. So we use those songs when we don't want to use data.

Try to keep discovering new music to the WiFi at home.

For students Apple is R29.99.
Family plan is also missing, which would make it cheaper to go with the competition as well.
"R 89.99/month

Up to 6 people"
For Google Play. Currently using Spotify for suggestions and Apple Play music for playing the actual playlists (using Stomp, friend bought it for me).

Their value proposition has never been the issue - actually find it a bit weird that some would think so.

But it will be an issue though. To consumers not especially familiar with each service it's all about perception.

Soon:
- YouTube Music with the largest music selection by miles, ad-free YouTube, personal uploads and the exclusive Red content.
- Apple Music with a fair amount of exclusive video content, personal uploads and tight iOS integration.
- Spotify with nothing but music and no uploads.

You must see how that's a problem for Spotify. I mean, consider how rapidly Apple Music is catching them with paid subscribers even with rubbish auto stations and pretty poor curated playlists. Their positioning and perception is solid gold. And the deficits aren't things you typically think about unless you try another service.

I meant the value proposition of a subscription-based streaming service, not Spotify's in particular.

Ah. Well, I think most people are receptive to the value proposition, hence the near-complete takeover of the music streaming model. Applies to video too with Netflix, Hulu and the like.

Humble Monthly probably gives me the most value out of all my subscriptions, and I expect EA Origin Access Premier to be awesome value too. I hope more gaming studios turn to such models, especially Ubisoft. Although one can only play so many games in a month and they will quickly add up. All the more incentive to move quickly if you're a big publisher with your own game client I guess.

Yeah, it's not a bad model. I also enjoy it and find a lot more value than ownership would provide at this point. Especially with media.
