Springbok emblem to be scrapped?

Friday 22nd June 2007
The Springbok emblem that has been used since 1906, will once again come under review as the emblem of South Africa's rugby team.

Cedrick Frolick, ANC chief whip in the parliamentary sports portfolio committee, confirmed to the Rapport that the issue of the Springbok would be raised at the ANC's policy conference.

"It's not only about the Springbok emblem but about uniform colours for all national teams in the interest of nation building," Frolick said.

"Some teams do not look like South African teams when they're on the field. The soccer team have a different strip every time they play.

"It has been decided twice that the Protea should be the only national sports emblem. The last time was in 1998. Talks about the application will now begin in earnest."

The ANC have, however, come up against opposition from the DA who have said that the ANC had wrongly linked the emblem with apartheid and had chosen to overlook its history post 1994.

"The rejection of the Springbok emblem is like throwing away a treasure from our national heritage," DA spokesperson on sport, Donald Lee said.

"When Bryan Habana's mother thinks about the Springbok emblem it will certainly not be because of apartheid but because of her son's unbelievable performances for the Springboks.

"If Nelson Mandela could proudly wear a Springbok jersey with number six on the back there could be nothing distasteful about the emblem.

"When the players sing the national anthem with their hand on their heart, it is clear that the emblem shows how far we have come as a nation," Lee said.

The delegated power for execution rested with the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) that, in accordance with the new Sports Law, had to establish a national colours board for the awarding of all national colours.

Frolick had said earlier that the Springbok should disappear to complete transformation in rugby, but that it was more important that the SA Rugby Union change its constitution to have more say in managing transformation at provincial level.

"The Springbok still represents the old (racially divided) past. We should start looking at replacing the emblem," he said.

The government loves to hate rugby.:eek: The last sentence really gets me.....

What do they not Understand, ??? All over the world we are known as the Springboks, and even the UK or Australia, or New-Zealand commentators call us the Bucks, or Springbucks, And our local commentators say "Die bokke is op die veld" , and this isn't about a recially devided past, or anything to do with colour, cause even the coloured and black folks of SA say "i-amma-bokko bok" , "Go Bokke" etc.etc.

Each team around the world has a short nickname, Kiwi's as New-Zealand, Auzzies as Australia.

All over the world we are known as The Springbucks (Springbokke) , The bucks ..........in short South-Africa.

the Protea is our National flower, and the Springbuck is our National Animal.

I don't see how the Springbok logo has something racially or anything else connected to it, except that its a well known Logo and also connected to SA-Rugby Sport.

Feel free to correct me on any point or statement.

Thanks

If they want to standardise it then just make the national colours 'Protea Colours' like every other sport - no reason why the team itself can't be the Springboks thou - they have a well established brand ;)

Amazing how they are going on about rugby and it not being repesentitive of the nation because there are not enough non whites in the team and all that tosh. What about soccer, why don't we have quota (white) players in the national soccer team? Why all this bitching about the PSL giving the soccer to Supersport and it thereby not being available to the masses blah blah blah??? I want all rugby free to view then too.

Basically it comes down to one thing... anything that existed pre 1994 has to be changed and mutilated and screwed with so the new regiem can have its mark on it. Even when there is no vaild reason for the change.

Wait a minute... come to think of it, the Springbuck... that little brown buck is racist... it is brown, not black or white. I know lets change it something more representive... like say a Zebra that is black and white, with a bit of brown too. Thats better all nice and equal and all that.

yes they government has intense meeting's on changing the emblem of our national team while ppl get murdered babies get raped, car hijacks etc

yes im glad to see they worrying about the important stuff in life and not something as trivial as crime

The Springboks were founded in 1891 and the National Party didn't come into power until 1948... How does that tie the Springboks in with Apartheid?!

Bryan Habana says "I scored a try for the Springboks" not "I scored a try for the team that was founded to force National Party politics down everyone's throats so everyone would immediately see the connection between the Springboks and Apartheid and support it"

Proof, once again, that our government is trying to keep throwing our past in our faces and not move on and forget the past. Instead of leaving inconsequential things like our rugby and focusing on the serious stuff (murders, strikes, rapes, etc), we have to hear about Apartheid every...single...day...

I for one am sick and tired of it

Well said WKJ.. I could not have said it better myself!

I watched a docie on Mandela once. He said he wont change or meddle with Rugby as he did not want to offend the whites in SA, His words were let us all love rugby and all it represents.

A scholar and a gentleman indeed.

Sadly though JK8 the current lot don't seem to care to much. Every year the louts just multiply and attack the Springbok with ever increasing venom.

I say to hell with them all, take the Springbok, pack it away while it is still worth something and only superficially scared by political interfering and posturing, and lets remember what was once one of the greatest forces in world rugby in all it's glory.

It will be a sad day but honestly the Springbok does not deserve the abuse it has been receiving of late. The politicians are hell bent on it's destruction and denying them the chance to systematically do that is perhaps best.

Then soon enough, as the purge of local talent continues due to quota's, we can go on tour with Bafana Bafana and play other global rugby powerhouses like Mauritius and Congo, or something.

... and streets and airports get renamed ...

Strange, how the hands that helped build this country, even the non-apartheid implementing ones, are being removed from our history.
