The latest updated Korando. You still see a few of the current model on SA roads.

"The SsangYong Korando SUV has been greatly enhanced for 2017 with a stylish and contemporary new front end design and with upgraded equipment.

The car sports a distinctive new grille and headlight treatment, adopting the new SsangYong 'look' first seen on the Tivoli and Tivoli XLV, and on the new Rexton announced recently. This also includes new fog lights, lower valance and bonnet. It features daytime running lights using 11 high-luminescent LED lamps with separate lenses to improve visibility, and on the inside a new ergonomically designed steering wheel.

There are four models in the range: the two-wheel drive SE at £17,000; SE 4x4, £18,500; ELX 4x4, £22,000; and ELX with automatic transmission from £23,500.

With its 2-tonne towing capacity, the SsangYong Korando has always been popular with those needing to tow a caravan, horsebox or boat trailer. With plenty of interior space, considerable legroom for all passengers, an almost completely flat floor and generous boot space - up to 1,312 litres, there's room for bulky leisure equipment or a couple of large dogs.

All models come with electrically operated and heated door mirrors with puddle lamps, RDS radio and iPod & Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning, tinted glass and roof rails. The ELX adds a raft of additional equipment including front & rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, 7" touchscreen, RDS radio and TomTom sat nav, distinctive new 18" diamond-cut wheels, leather seats, heated steering wheel and heated front & rear seats.

The new SsangYong Korando is powered by a turbo-charged, Euro 6 compliant 2.2 litre diesel. Maximum power is 178ps and torque to 400Nm, with maximum torque delivered from a low of 1,400rpm and maintained through a wide range up to 2,800rpm for smooth, progressive driving from the start. The engine can be matched with either a 6-speed manual or optional 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission for smooth, dynamic gear changing, comfortable driving and lively acceleration, and comes with either front wheel-drive, or an intelligent on-demand all-wheel drive system."

2017 SsangYong Korando facelift: prices and specs revealed

SsangYong has revealed prices and specs for the newly facilitated Korando – the latest version of the firm’s value alternative to the Nissan Qashqai.

On sale now, buyers will get a choice of two trim levels to choose from - base SE cars and better equipped and more expensive ELX models. The two-wheel-drive SE level Korando is priced from £17,000, with the same car fitted with a four-wheel-drive system coming in at £18,500. ELX cars come with four-wheel-drive as standard, and kick off from £22,000. An automatic gearbox can be had for an extra £1,500.

In terms of equipment, SE cars come with Bluetooth connectivity, air-conditioning, electric and heated door mirrors plus roof rails and tinted rear windows. Stepping up to the ELX car unlocks goodies such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with built in sat nav and a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, plus heated leather seats alongside a heated steering wheel.

The changes to the 2017 Korando are best described as subtle, with a slightly altered exterior look thanks to a more prominent ‘shoulder-wing’ grille design and reprofiled headlamps. The new lenses feature LED daytime running lights, too. Fresh diamond-cut 18-inch alloy wheels complete the look.

Inside, there’s a new steering wheel designed to be easier to use, while a new front-end safety camera complements the rear-view camera to boost safety and convenience. The infotainment and TomTom navigation system is unchanged, however.

Also identical is the 176bhp 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, introduced back in 2015. Some markets also get the choice of a 2.0-litre petrol engine, while both are available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox. There are no changes to the suspension.

New Ssangyong Korando SUV revealed ahead of Geneva

Nissan Qashqai rival gets rugged makeover, with full electric version to follow in 2020

The new fourth-generation SsangyongKorando SUV has been revealed ahead of the Geneva motor show, with the company confirming that a full electric version will follow in 2020.

The firm has released a single image of the Nissan Qashqai rival, showing the new exterior look of the car with a redesigned front end with a new grille and headlights, and sharper sculpting on the side. The new Korando takes inspiration from the e-SIV concept, which previewed a future electric SUV from the firm.

According to Ssangyong, the new model is 4410mm long and 1830mm wide, dimensions that match the previous Korando, but at 1675mm, it is 35mm higer than the old model. Ssangyong says that the ‘robust’ exterior is accompanied by a new-look interior that will feature more head room and rear space, with a 10.25in LCD instrument display.

The Korando will launch with a choice of 1.5-litre turbo petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines, with Ssangyong saying that a full electric version “will follow”. Last year, Ssangyong UK boss Nick Laird told Autocar that the EV – pencilled in to launch in 2020 – would be a “huge step forward, even over the current model”, and pledged it would remain a “proper 4x4” with off-road capability.

The e-SIV concept featured an electric range of up to 280 miles, with a 61.5kWh battery pack driving a 188bhp electric motor.

The Korando is also set to be offered with a hybrid powertrain in the future.

SsangYong Korando

The SsangYong Korando SUV has been completely revised in 2019 with an all-new contemporary exterior design, a refined, premium quality and spacious interior, enhanced driver assistance and safety systems, plus state-of-the-art connectivity.

The car sports a new-look throughout which has been designed to maximise its robust character with a distinctive new grille and headlight treatment at the front.

The new SsangYong Korando SUV is designed for families seeking an active lifestyle, and will appeal to those requiring a car that can handle the rough and tumble of family life, with sector leading interior space for growing children, and generous boot space for all their leisure equipment and daily needs.

The car will go on sale in Korea in early 2019, with European sales set to commence from mid-2019.

Form and function - contemporary style meets pure practicality

With an all-new and distinctive style externally, the front aspect draws on the new SsangYong-look but with strongly sculptured side lines.

While this highly contemporary look is designed to appeal to a younger customer profile, the extremely practical design will appeal to all ages.

Longer, wider and lower than the car it replaces, the new SsangYong Korando measures 4,452mm long, 1,870mm wide and 1,620mm high, and with a wheelbase of 2,675mm, one of the longest in its class for increased comfort. Luggage capacity ranges from 551 litres with all seats in position, up to a huge 1,248 litres with the rear seats folded.

Inside, the spacious interior provides better head-room and rear seat space than its competitors, with a high-tech premium feel interior. It is also driver-orientated with a range of features such a 9" AVN (audio visual navigation) screen and 10.25" full colour LCD cluster dual navigation to provide all the information needed, and four-way adjustable seat with lumber support for comfort. Meanwhile passengers also benefit from features such as colour changeable ambient lighting, and doors that are designed to cover the sills along the lower part of the body to ensure they don't pick up dirt from the side of the car when getting in and out.

New Ssangyong Korando SUV is capable off-roader

Nissan Qashqai rival gets rugged makeover, with full electric version to follow in 2020

The new fourth-generation Ssangyong Korando SUV has made its first public appearance at the Geneva motor show, with the company confirming that a full electric version will follow in 2020.

The firm had released a single image of the Nissan Qashqai rival, showing the new exterior look of the car with a redesigned front end with a new grille and headlights, and sharper sculpting on the side. The new Korando takes inspiration from the e-SIV concept, which previewed a future electric SUV from the firm.

According to Ssangyong, the new model is 4452mm long and 1870mm wide, dimensions that largely match the previous Korando, but at 1620mm, it is fractionally lower.

Last year, Ssangyong UK boss Nick Laird told Autocar that the EV would be a “huge step forward, even over the current model”, and pledged it would remain a “proper 4x4” with off-road capability.

The e-SIV concept featured an electric range of up to 280 miles, with a 61.5kWh battery pack driving a 188bhp electric motor.

The Korando is also set to be offered with a hybrid powertrain in the future.

Ssangyong Korando 1.6 Ultimate 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

It may not be the most dynamically rewarding or refined SUV out there, but there’s undoubtedly a relatively capable, affordable tow car in the new Korando Ultimate. With standard features such as heated and ventilated seats, sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it’s a well-equipped one, too.

Admittedly, a Volkswagen Tiguan with a 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine, four-wheel-drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic ‘box will tow up to 2500kg and cost less at £31,120. It'll offer greater refinement, a more comfortable ride and a bit more in the way of brand cache, too. But for that amount of money, it’ll be an entry-level model, devoid of the high level of standard kit you’d get in the similarly priced Ssangyong. And for those members of the caravanning and towing fraternities at which the Korando is aimed, that could just be enough to swing a decision in its favour.

Ssangyong Korando 2020 - Is it worth considering? - OSV

SsangYong's Korando has previously been something of a fringe player in the value reaches of the mid-sized SUV class, but this MK4 model aims to edge into the mainstream.

It's well equipped, rather smart and can tow up to 2.0-tonnes. Sounds promising.

This model's also better equipped than most comparable rivals and can tow heavier loads. But all of this you'd maybe expect from a SsangYong.

Can this one though, offer a properly class-competitive proposition when it comes to things like fit and finish, drive dynamics, efficiency and safety? Let's find out.
