New 2021 Ssangyong Korando EV due for launch in August
South Korean SUV specialist looks to all-electric future; with larger J100 flagship also on the way
South Korean firm SsangYong has started production of the Korando e-Motion, its first electric car, as the company accelerates its new model development programme to secure its future.
The Korando e-Motion will be heavily based on the existing combustion-fuelled car, with subtle bespoke styling details hinting at its underpinnings. Ssangyong will also speed up development of its second EV, a medium-sized SUV under the project name ‘J100,’ set to launch in 2022 - seemingly as a successor to the long-defunct Musso large SUV.
European deliveries of the Korando e-Motion will begin in August with UK deliveries expected later this year due to restricted supplies of semiconductors.
The company has struggled financially even after Indian manufacturing giant Mahindra rescued the SUV specialist in 2010, and filed for bankruptcy in South Korea last year. It says a renewed focus on eco-friendly mobility will be central to its rehabilitation procedures, as it looks for a new investor that will commit to continuous future investment.

The folks at Ssangyong have released the design sketches of an all-new SUV, codenamed the X200. And it looks as if the Suzuki Jimny and Jeep Wrangler had a child.
As per the sketches, the SUV clearly looks like a rugged off-roader heavily inspired by the Jimny and the Wrangler. Up front, the quirky grille design with circular headlamps and slats look similar to the Jimny. Also, with the brawny fenders, wide wheel arches, and what looks like a relatively long wheelbase, the SUV’s silhouette and proportions seem Wrangler-like.
The carmaker has said that the X200 will utilize a new design philosophy called ‘Powered by Toughness.’ This is the same design theme that will shape the recently announced J100 midsize EV.
We don’t yet know what will power the upcoming SUV. But, considering the J100 will have electric propulsion, we reckon the X200 will also get the same. Also, expect a standard ICE option to be offered alongside the e-powertrain.
Expect SsangYong’s new SUV to officially debut sometime later this year. What does this mean for India? Well, given how things are poised right now, it could mean zilch. The Mahindra & Mahindra-owned company has been embroiled in a legal tangle since December 2020 after defaulting on the payment of loans amounting to 60 billion South Korean won (approximately Rs 400 crore). Moreover, the Mahindra Group, in June 2020, had decided to stop investing in SsangYong Motor.
That said, in India, we have the SsangYong G4 Rexton rebadged as the Mahindra Alturas G4 and the XUV300 based on the Tivoli SUV.

Should I buy one?
The Korando’s ride and handling are far from good, then - but equally far from offensively bad, if you can content yourself with the car’s big-picture selling points.
For its size and practicality, the genuine 200-mile range (which we verified in mixed use, and at a pretty chilly ambient temperature at that), its handsome (actually, let’s call it generous) equipment level, its strong seven-year warranty and the fact that all of that comes for a price you can compare favourably with a lot of petrol-powered SUV rivals, the Korando e-Motion is worth its place in Ssangyong’s UK offering. There are markedly better-driving and more desirable full-size crossover SUVs than this, of course - but they've all got much steeper price tags to match.
