I have a machine that I still use every day for my photo processing etc and I don't quite want to upgrade the whole machine just yet but some performance issues are creeping in (random clicks, program issues and spin-ups, etc) and this seems to be down to a full and tired HDD Main Drive. Alaso as is the nature of these things the Main Drive is full of "back end" junk and files etc, so was thinking of just getting a new OS installed and a new Main Harddrive.

The harddrives I have at the moment are:
Main Drive: HDD 256GB running Win7
Sec Drive: HDD 1TB (mostly for storing photos and other files)
I also have an external portable 4TB HDD

So here are the questions:
- is it worth it or wise to rather install a SSD into this PC?
If so what should I look for (brand, specs, etc)

I will use the computer mostly for photo editing etc using Photoshop, Lightroom etc.

The specs on the CPU and RAM are not amazing but they are pretty good so no need to change that.

Thanks

Yes get an ssd as it will make a massive difference. Just don't get a small one that will fill up quickly again.

You don't state pc specs like make & model, it might have a m.2 slot for sata or nvme dad's, if it doesn't you'll have to get a normal 2.5" sata ssd.

SATA SSD, 240 or 480GB. I don't think brand makes a difference; I have fitted dozens for people, and they all seem much the same. Macrium Reflect to clone the drive, or do a clean install. Upgrade to Win10 when complete.

Are you sure it doesn't have an SSD already? Is this perhaps a 250GB hard drive? Run CrystalDiskinfo to check:
