SSD for Macbook Mid 2014 15"

Other than pure f***kery had any concrete reason emerged why Apple decided to solder the ram to the boards?

There are lighter and thinner ultrabook laptops that have upgradeable ram slots so space for the slot isn't the issue.
Profit: cheaper to solder as no connector with added bonus of forcing customer to buy more expensive drives.
From the 2018 MacBook pro onwards, there is no longer a recovery port on the mobo anymore, so if the board dies, say goodbye to your data.

Some might argue space, but imho that's a tiny amount of space saving and there was basically no difference in the chassis between the generations where they soldered and where they used connectors.

Ouch, that sucks, if you have no backups even if the ssd is fine you are screwed.

Soldered ram and ssd also means a dead board can't be scavenged for parts, all R15k+(replacement cost of mobo) of Apple perfection must get binned

I bought Intel 660P 2TB m.2 + adapter from amazon and installed it successfully on my late 2013 MBP. This m.2 SSD is lower than average performers but it works for my usage. $200 for 2TB m.2 SSD, $30 for tools and adaptor(long one). You need to add shipping. It was simple to do the upgrade. This is after I have installed Intel 660P 2TB m.2 on my late 2013 MBP. It is pity that RAMs are soldered. So it is not possible to upgrade RAMs. :-(

You need to replace your battery soon, its gassing out.
Keep an eye on it., common issue, can cause damage while it expands, especially to the trackpad.
 
I have installed my new SSD with the longer adaptor and it does not give me any issue. However after upgrading my SSD from 256GB (Sandisk MBP original) to Intel 660P 2.0TB. The boot takes longer. It can be my economy grade Intel SSD. :)

I've opted to go the 1TB OWC - here's to everything running smoothly. Fresh install coming!

I had a similar problem once - try going to the Startup Disk system preference and selecting the drive and see if that speeds things up.
 
Macbook Pro 2012 13inch, I had 120GB SSD + 500GB (hdd that came with) setup as Fusion Drive, I removed the Fusion drive , replaced the 500gb with 1TB.

Installed Mojave, all went well BUT the thing seems slow and freezes up every so often, I checked 1TB with Disk Sentinal, said it was fine.
 
I wanted to get a MacBook Pro - because reasons, however I am going to stick with a high spec Dell or Asus unit with Linux.

I am not going through this effort to upgrade a Laptop if I need too. If I want a MacBook feel - I'll use Elementary OS
 
Right, so I finally sorted this out after ignoring it for a month. Everything working 100%. Read and Write speeds are more than double that of the original Apple SSD. Installation was painless and dead easy. Now running a 2015 MBP with 1TB of fast storage ! Things to note if you are doing this upgrade :

1. Ensure you are running Mojave (or High Sierra at the very least). Because the SSD has no OS on it, you will need to boot from a USB installer of MacOS. Also, these versions natively support NVME and your bootloader needs to be on either of these versions.
2. Make a USB macOS installer.
3. Create a full Time Machine Backup of your existing drive.
4. Boot into the USB installer and open up disk utility.
5. Format the newly installed NVME drive.
6. Restore from Time Machine backup.
7. Behold the awesomeness of your far superior NVME drive.

That's it ! Bob's your aunty ;)
 
Sorry, I should add that a better NVME adapter to get is the Sintech M.2 adapter on Amazon. I changed the QNINE one for that based on a couple of reviews. Sintech is way better as it cushions the NVME drive and is supplied with a slightly longer screw for mounting.
