Profit: cheaper to solder as no connector with added bonus of forcing customer to buy more expensive drives.Other than pure f***kery had any concrete reason emerged why Apple decided to solder the ram to the boards?
There are lighter and thinner ultrabook laptops that have upgradeable ram slots so space for the slot isn't the issue.
From the 2018 MacBook pro onwards, there is no longer a recovery port on the mobo anymore, so if the board dies, say goodbye to your data.
Some might argue space, but imho that's a tiny amount of space saving and there was basically no difference in the chassis between the generations where they soldered and where they used connectors.
