I'd like some advice on the available options to put a 256gb ssd drive into my mbp: balance between price and speed.

I haven't found that balance yet so I'm also interested to hear people's suggestions. In the meantime I'll hang in there with my seagate hybrid drive.

Had a hardware roadmap meeting with a major hardware manufacturer recently and their projection was that price/size parity with hard drives would occur within 3-5 years. We use SSD's in our servers.

It would appear our prices are linked more to the UK market.

Pity we couldn't find a few of the US deals locally: http://www.pricewatch.com/browse/hard_removable_drives/ssd_256gb

Samsung's say prices will drop, it's just not going to be now (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10196422-64.html) -- most likely the demand exceeds production (re smart phones) hence higher price.

Guess it's a case of how badly do I want it now.

I have contacted DigiCape for putting in a SSD into my Macbook Pro two weeks back, and price made it not worth it. A 128GB instead of my 250GB would be R2000 more, and a 256GB would be over R5000 more.
IMO: SSD don't crash, but has your mac ever before? Boot up and sleep is instant, but my MacBook Pro boots in <30S and doesn't loose power when asleep anyway. And apps open instantly now anyway, so to justify R2000+ is not worth it atm.

It's the new technology debacle, is early adoption really worth the price. You're right as much as I'd love it, I can't justify the cost atm.

Debacle or debate?

One of the best options for a Macbook Pro is to get a drive caddy which replaces your optical drive, so you can have an SSD + HDD configuration.

SSD's are horrendously expensive, no doubt. To make up for it, they are insanely quick though. You can get a 60gb Sandforce for R1200 and a 120gb for R2400 or so.

A lot of money but if you're a creative professional or someone who uses their PC all day like a programmer it's a no brainer IMO.

And here I thought Mac OS X didn't support SSD's and TRIM? So I can actually throw my 256GB SSD into my wife's new MBP and never worry about formatting every 6 months? Or should I just stick it into my 12" netbook and be done with it?

I have a SSD in my Macbook Pro and honestly its not worth the fuss. Sure its quick (16 second boot time) but an i7 with a 7200rpm drive or hybrid drive is quick enough IMO and its not worth the crazy price. I'm considering selling my SSD and spending the cash on something more worthwhile because in a years time we'll be laughing at how much they cost now.

Depends on what you do and how highly you value speed of course. Also on what brand SSD you buy.

Hang on - why are you having to reformat your wife's MBP every 6 months?
