SSD inaccessible - Recovery tool

Put it in the freezer to condense the roms, then you should have a brief window to get the data off.
 
Generally, when an SSD dies it DIES because the flash memory itself can become inaccessible. I have never been able to recover a dead SSD.

if you do want to backup to an SSD maybe look at a raid 1 or raid 5 and just to note raid is not a form of backup but it creates more redundancy.

You can also backup to a local NAS or external HDD.

I would then also run scheduled backups off-site to something like https://www.z1storage.com/ which is local S3 and far cheaper than AWS or Azure.

I had a 2Tb NVMe die on me after 6 months and had to send it back to Wootware. I bought a Teamgroup 2Tb that also died on me after 14 months. Sent it back to Wootware and now I'm using a Samsung EVO.

At least with HDD'S you can start to hear the clicking and can sometimes get lucky with diskdrill etc :ROFL:

I thought it was due to hot plugging but even after ejection it worked once, any new tries using ejection makes it not work.

I've actually never even heard of Hiksemi before.

Been using Samsung EVO SSD's in various systems for almost 10 years now and in all that time I have never had a single drive reported as faulty (touch wood).

That happens because whatever is supplying the power can't keep up, Voltage sag on the wires, or a crappy power supply.
I have seen this issue a lot with external hard drive enclosures. I measured the voltage and saw the 12V rail sag to 10V when the drive spun up.

Anecdotal at best. Here are some stats of mine from 1 Jan to present. It doesn't give a long period for warranty info, BUT it doesn't for any of the other brands either:

I'd give stats for 2023, but HikSemi is a newer brand. Before that, it was part of HikVision, and HikVision WAS actually terrible. Bad enough for me to pull several SKUs from sale, which is something I don't generally do as everything has an acceptable failure rate, and exceeding that is rare. An example was the HikVision C100 240GB - the newer HikSemi WAVE (still bearing the C100 part number) is infinitely better, with no returns to date.

Samsung's failure rate is due to the 980 Pro, and they're extremely close to being disabled for sale.

It's actually weird to see WD and Seagate doing so badly. It's still an acceptable failure rate, but far higher than I expected. Kingston is still my favourite, with the KC3000 having a failure rate of 0% in the last 1.5 years other than one which was replaced for a fault that couldn't be replicated. It was out of box, so the disti just swapped it anyway.

Yeah I suspect that my neices fiddle with the insides of the tower at times since there were loose case bolts. Never did catch them in the act though...kids love to experiment. Those poor SSD's must have went through hell and back to fail so quick...

2 years ago they were making holes on a stuffed pikachu using the pins of a 12th gen i7 that they removed from my spare pc... RIP to that and the water cooler that they pried off.

Maybe it's time for a new motherboard then. It fails on the case front ports and the ports direct on the motherboard.

What erks me is that it's just that drive, it's sister I bought at the same time is fine. :unsure:

I copied the data to the sister drive anyway, just in case.

An internal drive with 5 year warranty such as the IronWolf Pro, Red Pro, Exos, etc - I'd avoid the surveillance drives such as the Purple and SkyHawk. The IronWolf and Red drives are also designed to work in high-vibration environments, so will PROBABLY be ever so slightly more resilient to bumps. Add to that a 3.5" enclosure.

I doubt it'll affect reliability, but it gives you the financial peace of mind of having 3-4 years more warranty than you'd otherwise have.

The other bonus is that if the enclosure dies, replacement is easy enough vs sending a complete unit in for warranty.

The other other bonus is that if you decide you would rather use the drive for internal storage, does so doesn't void your warranty.

I'm absolutely not a proponent of external drives.

Good advice since i was on the lookout for mechanical HDD's. Do you have Ironwolf Pro 7200 rpms in stock?
 
I firstly try Chkdsk via command line to repair the partition if the partition is broken. I've only had one SSD fail and it failed into read only mode.

Don't use SSD's and flash drives for long term backup. They are not designed for that. Normal platter HDD's and cloud are best. Enable cloud storage on phone and then offload older pictures when it gets full onto multiple cold storage or buy extra cloud storage.
 
From a data recovery perspective, the success rates of recovery on SSDs is lower than on HDDs for many reasons. The two biggest reasons would be all of the different iterations of FW across all of the manufacturers and support thereof, and seconds when NAND memory starts to fail it fails fast.

We're able to recover a lot more SSDs today than we could say a year ago, as the support for the different families of SSDs and FW revisions grows with time.

There's definitely a big difference in quality between say the budget brands, sayHikvision, and the more expensive such as Crucial. Budget brands (of which there are many on Takealot and retail shops) use cheap electronic components with a shorter lifespan, budget NAND and controllers. Often when they fail there's a higher likelihood of them not being recoverable versus a Samsung or Crucial or WD. That being said, this week I've successfully recovered a KingDian, a Hikvision and some other one whose name I can't even remember.

It's definitely worth it to spend more on a reputable brand. I was very surprised to see those stats above about failure rates of SSDs sold with Samsung being the highest, that must be some sort of outlier.
