SSD upgrade on MBP?

Purely on SSD, I got 367mb/s Read and 470mb/s Write. With the Fusion drive, I get 209mb/s Read and 450mb/s Write. So even though my laptop feels just as fast as before, the numbers don't lie.

True - I expected as much though. Conventional drive must be slowing it down.

It's still a truckload faster than with a HDD alone. I'll keep it as is for now and see how it behaves over the next couple of months. One thing I found out when doing this was that you must use a OSX 10.8.3 installer to get access to a Disk Utilty that will allow you to make a Fusion drive or have access to a 2012 Mac Mini/iMac that has 10.8.2 or higher. Those machines have a special version of Disk Utility that can create fusion drives. Just download the OSX installer on it and make a USB installer from it.

Well I didnt upgrade to SSD but instead took my DVD out and upgraded to two Seagate 750GB Hybrid drives running on RAID 0. I have definitely seen a boost in speed and just love the 1.5TB space I have.

I run two backups the whole day
1. Time Machine on the whole drive (2TB Time machine - Western Digital)
2. 1 TB Carbon Copy clone every two hours of my WORK folder only.

I also have my software backed up on another drive.

I will go with SSD once I can afford two min 500GB drives.

BTW - Im running a 17-inch MBP

where did you guys buy your ssd drives?

Is it better to get one locally or from outside the country? What ssd would you suggest? And yes 'price' is a major factor

If you have the Nvidia MCP79 controller stay away from Sandforce based SSDs. Most of the Sandforce based SSD are limited to SATA1 (1.5GB/s) when coupled with MCP79.

If you have the MCP79 you are basically limited to the Crucial M4, Sandisk Extreme or Samsung 840.

I have the Samsung 840 Pro, and no issues thus far. Crucial M4 and Sandisk was very difficult to get hold of (although most online shops show them available, suppliers dont have stock).

I got the corsair 128 GB SSD for R1350, and corsair Vengeance 8gb 1600 MHz ram for R1000 (including Delivery), I was thinking of initialy installing the 8GB ram and leaving in the excisting 2GB (will that work?) making it 10 GB, I read somewhere the optical drive does not use the full potential of the neww SSD's (6GB)?

It's advisable to use a matching pair, but yes, it will work. I was running 12GB (1x8GB and 1x4GB) on my 2012 13" MBP before I sold it, and didn't have any problems.

Only problem is that 256GB really doesn't go very far so I put the old 756GB drive in an external bay and use it for Time Machine backups as well as any non-critical data like ISO files and other stuff I don't use every day.

Many people use a caddy and place the old spinner in the optical drive bay.

Yeah I have mine in an external housing and use it as a split Time Machine backup and non essential data drive

Just saw a vertex 2 for £50 for a 100gb model. Will this do the trick in my 2011 13" MBP?

Ok - another option is the Toshiba 2.5" SATA III SSD - this is for a MacBookPro8,1

100Gb is rather small; are you planning to use this as a 2nd drive i.e. To replace the DVD, if so don't forget the adapter cage.

Vertex 2 is a great option

This one great too...

Just make sure you know your SATA limits i.e. Don't pay extra for a 6Gbps drive if your MBP only supports 3Gbps.

Ended up getting a samsung 840(?). I'm planning on running the os and apps as well as my current aperture library on it. My current hdd will go into the caddy amazon delivered this morning.

Link to the caddy, Bwana? Pretty please? Also looking at going the same route on my mid-2012 MBP soonish...

Nothing wrong with Samsung. Same setup as my MBP; couldn't be happier.

Ps. Be careful when restoring to not forgo the steps to create the recovery partition. Also don't forget to check that Trim support is enabled once OSX is installed & reenabled after every OS X update (look for an app called trim enabler)

Sure - this is the one I purchased yesterday - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008DCMRNA/ref=pe_385721_37038051_pe_217191_31005151_M3T1_dp_1 here in the UK.

FWIW it's identical to the one I got from dealextreme a while back and had delivered to me in SA - http://dx.com/p/designer-s-2-5-sata-to-sata-hdd-caddy-for-apple-macbook-pro-more-121002

I would have ordered from DX.com again but I wanted it today :)
