what is so special about an ssd? it seems to be very popular and why is it so expensive?

When playing games you have no load screens... ever. In windows when you click on something or open somthing it opens instantly.
No idea why they are so expensive though. Someone else probably does though.

Its extremely fast, you would see the performance when windows loads up, games...anything that takes forever to load will be fast.

Its expensive because the chips that it uses is expensive, whereas a platter can store more space but cheaper to make.

It reads data much faster than a normal disc.

IE, hard drives with platters read longer because the head within the disc has to move to it a specific location, access time, read time, spin up/down time and more stuff are all the things that needs to be taken into consideration when use a normal drive. thats why you get 7600 rpm and 5400 rpm drives, not sure about the specific numbers, i forgot.
and a 8.9 ms access time and stuff.

whereas with an SSD, it uses flash memory, so there is no header to read a specific track and spin up/down, the data is in a known area so that is why it is much faster than normal drives, and that is why it has a hefty price tag.

Actually that's incorrect I have cod bo installed on my SSD and it still loads about the same time it would of on my hard drive, it might load a little faster though.

I notice it in homefront, the load screen literally flashes and I'm in.

hmmm simply put its like having ram as a hard drive, seek times the lowest we will ever see, unless the advent
of new tech like quantum tech etc but yeah its purely a speed thing!

+1 to all the above.

Buying an SSD was the best move I ever made - using it for my Boot and Game drives - load times of the OS are damn quick, approx. 25 seconds from power-on to desktop with all relevant programs loaded.
Gaming - loading time is greatly reduced in 95% of cases.

Remember that it's also dependant on the type of SSD you have - the more expensive ones have much faster read/write times... prices are dropping though!

Hmm , my laptop takes about 12 seconds, from a cold boot.

have to then agree with killa. 12sec on a cold boot I would like to see.

I still get my Asus screen plus a RAID disk check (which could probably be switched off somewhere).

maybe take it from when you see the WINDOWS LOADING screen?
or should test it on a SAFE MODE boot.
