Hi Guys

I'm in the process of building a web app and need an SSL certificate for the site. The encryption is only needed to protect passwords and such (no financial data or transactions will be transferred so no EV or anything like that needed).

I see that the prices of the same type of certs (ex single domain certs) vary greatly between vendors and I'm not sure if I need the more expensive certificates.

Can I go with a cheap certificate and which vendor would be the best to buy from?

Get a free one from StartSSL. I've got plenty of them.

Are the free ones good enough for a business site?

Also I've seen recently chrome is no longer happy with SHA-1 certificates, does StartSSL support SHA-256 certificates?

Yes. I don't see why you couldn't use these on a business site if there are no financial transactions involved.

Okay thanks for the suggestions, I will go with StartSSL then
