Stability Problems

A quick question.. is the tray/shield method supposed to block other signals or amplify/collect (like a satellite dish) the signal facing the side of the shield where the modem is? I always thought it was the latter..

So the problem with disconnecting/not connecting again is due to a "stronger" tower. Interesting.. how are you supposed to calculate the distance not knowing where the tower is? Are there addresses for the towers? ie. Corner of smith and west..(example)

It does both, though amplify/collect is not really correct. What happens is the tray REFLECTS the signal. On the side the modem is the impression is given that the signal is amplified as the tray is basically reflecting additional radio waves onto the modem. On the other side of the tray the same is happening except it serves to shield the modem as the signal is being reflected away from the modem.

Placing the tray in various positions around the modem theoretically should allow you to "select" which tower you connect to. Of course this system is not infallible as some radio waves still penetrate the tray and/or reflect off other objects in the room. Best thing to do is just experiment with different trays and positions [;)]

ProAsm, I reckon I am 3 to 4 km from basestation 126 (Brixton?). Signal strength today is 30% with a metal tray behind the modem.

A reportback:

Today so far (Sunday 14th) it is all working like a dream. I connect first time, and stay connected.

Saturday 13th: a struggle to get through all the "Remote computer did not respond" and "Network not available", but I persevered, and once connected was not disconnected.

All in all a much better situation.

(There is another issue - seem to be having trouble switching the modem on, but if this persists I'll raise it in a separate post.)

I hope Sentech appreciate you!

How do you mean by having trouble switching the modem on ?
Is this without the mains connected or on its own.
If its with mains on, have alook at the 2 pin connector, sometimes that little insert does not make good contact.
The modem should come on automatically once the mains is inserted, in fact you cannot switch the modem off without pulling the mains out.

The switch off routine is to unplug the power at the wall, then to switch off the modem. To switch on I plug in at the wall. The modem used to switch itself on, as expected. Recently the modem lights have been coming on, but then go right off. This afternoon I had to press the on switch several times before the modem 'took' and stayed on. All the while the power supply was plugged in.

But this 'feature' is a new development - I'll see what happens during the week.

Meanwhile the connection to 126 is stable and I am [:)]

I also connect to tower 126. Tower 110 is the one closest to us, but the modem refuses to see it. Maybe the transmitter isn't pointing this way :P Anyway, as far as I know 126(Brixton) is about 15km from us and 126(Horizon View) is about 6km from us. I wish the modem would just see 110(Helderkruin) because that's 3.9km from us.

Wow Jhbgirl I had no idea to were 15k's from 126
Whats your signal strength and what are your connections like - generally ?
I'm surprised the modem wont see Helderkruin as I see its a 3 sector tower which makes it omni directional.

Hi

I am on tower 110 from linksfield I beleive.

I get disconnected about 100 times today already..

:(

Soon I will just get adsl..this is pissing me off, its been going on more than 1 week.

ProAsm, I think my signal strength is about 12% atm. I haven't disconnected since Thursday last week because I had so much trouble reconnecting the time before. My downloads are going great at the moment, hovering around 30kb/s.

Does anyone know if the problems with 126 have been sorted out. I can't move my modem to get more than 2 lights, where as before I had 4 and about 18%. When I try to move it anywhere it drops to 1 light, so I am not touching it :P

I need to unplug it now to connect it to a router though. It's just a pity I can't read the signal then because then if it doesn't want to connect I wouldn't know if it's something with the router or if it's the signal.

My hubby is getting a bit miffed that I am the only one with internet access via sentech while he has to use and pay for the isdn still. I just can't getting any means of networking to work...sorry guys...just venting... ;)

Jhbgirl I don't know why you are having problems connecting PC's together to share mywireless [V]. Originally we had 2 PC's connected together with a network crossover cable...it took very little setting up..only thing to remember is to share the sentech connection [;)]
Nowadays we connect 3 PC's together (all XP) and the only change we had to make was to buy the cheap 'ethernet switch' plus 3 network cables and connect up (ditch the x-over cable). [}:)]
