Meh. Loadshedding slapbang in the middle of the rugby this afternoon...

We didn't even get shedded during the 2am to 6am slot which is unusual. Perhaps they've broken something at the local switch?

Two more sheds scheduled for today. 2pm to 4:30pm and 10pm to 2:30am.

i am meant to be off right now also, 7:30 - 10:30 and still on. my batteries need a work out ffs :p

It's probably thanks to us that you Capies get mild shedding.

You're welcome :p
Um no, Cape Town has exactly the same amount. The only difference is that they have twice as many 2hr slots as opposed to Joburg’s less frequent 4hr slots. And I’m actually leaning towards Joburg’s system, because at least your area gets the odd day with no shedding on stage 2 in Joburg, whereas with the more frequent Cape Town schedule you are guaranteed to be load shed twice a day, every day, on stage 2.

Four and a half hours and we also sometimes get 2 shifts on the same day :( well my area anyway.

It's a mix of 3/4 days one slot and 3/4 two slots. It's better because if you get a crap evening slot you can either plan dinner earlier or later.

I don't mind Cape Town's system. Their schedule is incredibly reliable which makes planning around it easy.

Just wish Steenbras was here to help.

That sucks. Actually CT is supposed to be 2.5 hrs although they seem to use the last half hour as wiggle room to get the power back on so it’s often back on before the full 2.5.

Taking fridges and freezers into account, the shorter the load shedding the better and in general it is less of an inconvenience. Shorter but more frequent if necessary is fine.

Each switch places extra strain on infrastructure not designed to be switched on and off. The longer schedules are better for the aging network.

I also heard that the longer switching gives more time for oil to cool which is bad which indicates shorter periods is better? (I am not that clued up on those kinds of switches, just something i heard)

I have a beeper installed in my changeover switch housing to tell me when the street electrical supply is restored and then I change back over from the generator.

Last night at the end of loadshedding my beeper came on for half a beep, went off, then came on again and beeped normally. That clearly shows how dirty the power is when they first switch back on the supply as there was clearly either a surge or drop before things settled. How appliances handle these switch on's day after day astound me and all my kitchen/white appliances are 10yrs old +

They don't handle it. Every one of these surge loaded power switches slowly but surely chew away at your appliance until they fail. We are all sitting here waiting to see if the power will actually come back right now at 09:00. My lights are the trigger for me. I will wait 15 minutes before restoring any power to appliances.

How we experience Load Shedding in PTA East Zone 13

On the 4th Feb 2020, we had a LS event Stage 2 which was supposed to be for a maximum of 2.5 hours, which turned into a 7-hour stretch. My report logged via the contact SMS for TSH sent to them at 19:41 on the 4th, finally, got acknowledged as received by Tshwane without a reference number being issued at 23:09 on the 6th February, 5 minutes into another LS event.
This morning we had a repeat performance. LS schedule from 07:00 to 09: 30 finally ended after three Surges at 15:00.

Below is the Outage Reports we had to get our Councillor to squeeze out of Tshwane Metro. The reports only came out at the times indicated.:

7 Feb 13:49:
Strulands Sub Outage. Investigations underway. Found panel 6 MS Swaardleleie opened on overload. SO team busy liaising with control to give permission to close the breaker".

14:01:
Switching actions on hold as instructed by Control Centre. Specialised equipment needed and busy at Mamelodi outage. When done at Mamelodi team will proceed with further investigations at Strulands sub and Wapadrand Sub."

So it is official, Mamelodi is more important to Tshwane even though most of Mamelodi refuse to pay its electricity bills than large chunks of Die Wilgers, Lynnwood, Silver lakes and Wapadrand. Thee are many large shopping centres in the area.

Power came back for about 5 minutes at 14:30

14:46:
Please keep your demand low as they cannot switch power on if there is an electricity spike. it will continue to trip. Switch all appliances and lights off, please.
16:38
System Operators on their way back to the sub now.

Large parts of the area tripped again. so a few of us were lucky that pure residential areas stayed up after 15:00.

It is a circus of inefficiency and extremely poor power control. It would have been far better if personnel had been deployed to each large shopping centre to control how these centres came back online one by one, instead of trying to restore only at the substation.
What did they think would happen? All those shops with fridges, freezers and A/C units all trying to start at once.
Show just how poor the expertise is and how lazy the Tshwane personnel are.
We are in for a miserable time if this keeps on.

Here we go again....

Power came back on at 9:05am after hour 2 hour slot. Fan started making noise like it was connected to an inverter and off goes the power again.

Sub station trip or overload... Brakfontein Substation

people need to switch off their geysers during loadshedding, imagine 100000 geysers turning on at the same time?
