Cape Town – Standard Bank [JSE:SBK] customers found themselves stranded in no man’s land on the first day of Spring, as the bank’s customer facing business experienced technical difficulties.

Irate customers paying bills on the first day of the month took to Twitter to share their experiences, as the bank’s ATM, internet banking and POS ability stopped working.

@ratilwe said she was at the petrol station for almost an hour waiting. “They won't let me go cos my standard bank card is acting up.”

@downdetectorZA said “Standard Bank is having issues since 10:20 AM SAST”.

@halftimecurty wrote: “Anyone on Standard Bank They CRASHED!! Can't draw cash or swipe anywhere... That's a headsup for the day!! :) #keepcalm”

Standard Bank was quick to reply to Twitter comments, tweeting to each user: “Apologies for that, We're working hard to resolve this as soon as we can.”

Yeah, internet banking site was completely stuffed and banking app just kept returning errors.

Still can not log into internet banking, and they say their systems are up and running. Lies Lies Lies I tell you

latest error on standard bank when trying to pay a beneficiary - This session has encountered an exception error – Please login again. If the exception persists, Contact our Call Centre.

I was filling up around 0900 or so this morning, tried to draw cash at the ATM at the garage while the guy was busy and before the transaction was completed it failed and said comm error or something.

I was able to pay for the diesel though with my cheque card no problem.

STANDARD BANK APOLOGISES FOR TECHNICAL GLITCHES

Standard Bank has apologised to its clients for technical glitches that lasted several hours on Monday.

"The bank regrets any inconvenience caused," Standard Bank chief executive in personal and business banking Funeka Montjane said in a statement.

"We are investigating the root cause of the system failure. Our initial investigation has determined that the incident was caused by hardware failure," said Montjane, adding that the system was repaired within two hours.

Disgruntled clients, however, turned to social networking site Twitter to express frustration.

"back up and running!!!!! Where?" tweeted @dano2512 an hour after the bank claimed to have resolved the problem.

Standard Bank clients claimed they could not withdraw money from ATMs, and their cards were being declined at point-of-sale devices at shops. Internet and cellphone banking applications were also down.

Radio personality Redi Tlhabi took to her Twitter account to comment on the situation.

"Tjo! Standard Bank! This type of problem at this time of the month! !?? Now service providers&creditors think we are making things up," she tweeted.

Some of those who tweeted on the matter expressed embarrassment when their cards were declined at several retailers.

Other potential clients, however, expressed relief at not being affected.

@unathi_m said: "To think I almost opened an account with Standard Bank today..."

"Anyone who switched from FNB to Standard Bank after last week's pay day fiasco is probably banging their head on a wall right now," said @jonathangmeyer.

He was referring to technical problems that were also experienced by First National Bank last month.

Some FNB clients complained that their salaries were not deposited into their accounts on the 25th as scheduled. Others were unable to access their funds while some complained of their debit orders going off twice.

Meanwhile, Standard Bank said it would monitor its systems closely.

Hardware failure probably means one of their ancient COBOL mainframes decided to stop working. Old tech always bites you in the a$$ eventually...

They should be on SAP already, or has this changed within their core-banking? Also, at least some years back, FNB was running on an equally ancient Hogan system. I think with 24/7 shopping and purchasing everywhere, this is putting enormous pressure on all banks. SBSA is the worst when it comes to even doing simple branch-to-branch account transfers, which will not clear within 48 hours - puzzles me.

They're not on sap yet. Not on a core banking level at least.

Wow - scary. I finished consulting to SBSA in 2000 when we finished the OS/2 platform. 5 years later they were busy ripping it out and SAP/Windows was on the cards. I would have thought that between 2006 and now they would have completed the transition. In all fairness (the same company I worked for, did the branch banking app for FNB during the same period, and FNB was only able to complete 1/3 of the complete branch banking functionality - i.e. only teller, but no customer care/account opening).

No problems luckily. Filled up this morning before 8 and all went smoothly.

Not SAP fully as yet, part of their initial launch product is on SAP. However their primary payments systems still run on their ancient mainframe systems.

Most of their transactional accounts still run on mainframe along with all the rest of their products.

Anyone else still battling? I can log in to the banking website, but it is so PAINFULLY slow!
