Standard Bank website, app offline

Standard Bank website and app are offline AGAIN.
It is very helpful when your current bank makes your decision easier when you decide to move to another bank.

This is not news for me, Standard Bank is always going down now and then :( Makes me think they are running on old software / hardware that they keep patching up

Literally any large financial company that has been around for a few years do.

and when these issues happen, on a regular basis for Standard Bank, they still don't want to invest their billions into modern systems

Who says they're not? Do you expect them to announce multi year projects to the public?
I consult at multiple listed companies. Not doesn't have systems that are 30+ years old, still running on mainframes, that are so complicated and integral to the function of the company that it's an incredibly difficult and long process to replace them. It's an issue all across the world.

It is precisely that the bank is investing billions that these issues are happening :)

There is a failure on one of the backend network links that has caused failures across almost all services.

Ok. Fair comment.

Add credit cards to the list.

Yeah, that's an important one. They SMS'd saying IB and App down, but nothing about cards. People are having their cards declined, including mine, when I went to the shops. Lucky I had a backup Virgin card with me.

Still sounds like poor design and engineering here.
-Shouldn't links that can cause cascading failures be redundant
-Cascading failures should be engineering out

I can understand the website and app being down, but having catastrophic failure like this smells of bad implementation.

That's actually a requirement of anyone with a banking license, if I remember correctly.

Believe me, it is embarrassing when your credit card is declined and you know that you are not the one at fault.

Not using the App. They also implemented a new internet banking system. You have to link to the new internet banking site after creating a standard bank ID if you do not have one, (if you use the app you should have), and type in the old details to link your card to the new system.

Frustrating but so is anything new in the beginning.
