In the UK I worked with CAT5 and fiber structured cabling systems that were designed to standards such as BS EN 50173/50174 and ISO/IEC 11801.

Can anybody advise me which equivilent standards are/could be/should be generally applied in South Africa for designing and specifying generic structured cabling systems for SME and enterprise installations?

The standards are pretty much universal.

you could choose to build to any of these standards and you'd end up with a good system. I've just been wondering for a while which particular standards are favoured locally for properly designed cabling systems.

From what I recall we don't have any local standards wrt to structured cabling. As long as you follow ISO, IEEE etc standards you should be fine. You could also cross reference SABS standards but from what I recall that mostly deals with running data cabling next to power cabling which should be a no-no anyway.

Thanks. I think I'll try and lay my hands on a copy of the ISO standard and maybe the SABS ones. The sites I worked did have power running alongside copper and fiber runs but the standards specified minimum separation distances with and without shielding as well as earthing requirements.

Yeesh.
