Standby or Log Off ?

With Windows I suggest shutdown. It gets slower and slower over the time, corrupt itself. SSD if you want fast startup.

My laptop, running Win8 pro 64bit, is set to 'sleep' when I close the lid, and I do that for a few days after I'm finished for the day. After a few days I perform a shut down, and restart afresh. I do notice a slow-down after a few days of just letting the laptop sleep. It seems faster (start-up) after a complete power down / restart cycle.

That was in the days of 98 and XP, I've never had that problem with Windows 7 or 8. My current uptime is 26 days and going strong. I usually restart once a month when enough updates have piled up.

Hibernate on my home PC (Win 7). I only restart when requested to do so by a new app. My work PC I never put off

Sleep means the PC is still running. Hibernate is complete power off and fast start (slower than sleep but a lot faster than a shutdown). Set your laptop to hibernate when you close it.

Just to elaborate:

When you put it in Hibernate all your data from RAM is moved to your HDD. Since the HDD is non-volatile the data is stored until you switch the PC back on.. Once your PC is switched on data is just moved back to the RAM and you can just continue working seamlessly.

Sleep just switches off the monitor.

+1.
I had an uptime of 120 or so days before I did a restart and it was still blazing fast.

I am on XP - how do you set up Hibernate ? and then based on above posts, how often, in say a month, do you need to do a reboot ?

There's no hibernate in windows 8. Sleep, Shut down, Restart. But my ultra book has a ssd so wake up from sleep is just as fast as from a cold boot. It just takes longer to shut it down than to put it into sleep.

I just let is sleep all day and shut it down the last time I use it for the day.

For me as an IT tech ,i have Win 7 and always sleep my pc.I never restart unless for patching or performance issues.I find this way great when i just want my laptop out to resolve something urgently.Windows 7 boots very quick but i prefer this method.

Mine lasts a few months before I have to restart. That too with a lot of applications open at the same time.

I keep mine on these days, mostly because the PC is under a desk and I can't be arsed to reach down awkwardly and turn it on. Only shut down as needed, but with my next upgrade I'll have things better sorted and will probably have a SSD, so I can just shutdown or hibernate as usual.
