Standout tech deals this week

Goodness gracious, they are still selling the BlackBerry 9300?

Must be rejected stock from the rest of the world ending up in SA again.

Sauce? My brother has one, seems to be OK. He's a muppet with tech tho, wouldn't even consider an Android  so, maybe ignorance is bliss?

Holy sh#t people still buy Blackberry... And at that price, eish...

RIM just posted a $125m loss, guess they are trying to bleed income from anywhere they still can.

I have just moved over from Blackberry to Android, purely because I travel a lot overseas and the android works better. I don't know why people slate Blackberry that much. I still rate it as the best mobile experience I have had, great phone (I had the Torch, and a great OS, except for lack of good apps). And of course BIS through Vodacom is crap.

But that does not make BB a bad phone, and I understand why it is so popular. And why slate the price, it is in essence a good smartphone you getting for R2000.00. A bargain in my opinion. Also I now understand the BB business model a bit better - I am astounded by how much data my android is able to chew through with no effort at all!

Make no mistake, I love my Android, I am a great fan and it is a cool toy!!! If I have to go into Mobile battle though, I will choose my old Torch anyday! I truly hope RIM can turn it around, there is definitely a space for them.

I have probably owned more smart phones than both of your combined, including iphone 3gs,gs2,xperia's etc etc etc.
I have also owned almost every BB there is out there, and right now I am using a Galaxy note and a 9300.While there is no comparison honestly the 9300 is not that bad and it offers a decent entry into the bb world. The 8520 on the other hand was junk...by now 9300 should have been the entry level bb not that 8520 crap that some stores still sell!

ONLY gripe I have with my 9300 is that with a 16gb memory card thats getting quite full the phone does act up sometimes like stall for 5 seconds several times in the day,so if you have a smaller mem card you should be just fine and its a pretty decent phone.

Oh and MYBB even though this weeks specials seem dry, I love these articles once a week keep em coming!

Managed to get three of those Iconia 32gb tabs from incredible thanks to these article.

Apparently game has a special for the weekend. 2tb external hdd for R1000.when i went yesterday to get one they were "out of stock".how can they advertise and not have stock?still- they took my number and said theyll order 1 for me at that price.

You realize you can get a HTC Desire S for R99 p/m from Vodacom?

That price hardly seems a bargain to me.

I think your feelings mirror 99% of the populations feelings, they see Android/Apple as a toy because they see the cute robot/apple icon but they don't really understand the OS.

But it wouldn't be the first time people thought of something as a toy because they couldn't use it to it's full potential...

What exactly makes BlackBerry better, and more importantly why is SA the only country where people see it? (Is it perhaps marketing or lack of IT skills do you think?)

The reason Blackberry is so popular in SA is unlimited net for R60p/m. Take the USA for eg - it costs an EXTRA $10 per month for blackberry. So in the USA, you SAVE $10p/m by sticking to Android/iPhone. In SA, Blackberry still has a cheaper data plan and most importantly, is unlimited

Unfortunately price of mobile broadband is still way too expensive, for example a 1.5G prepaid bundle in Kenya costs about R90.00!!! We are still way more expensive. We pay that for a 250MB bundle.

I am also not saying that Blackberry is better, just that it is currently a good value for money proposition. Don't get me wrong, I love my Android and yes I do use it to its fullest potential, I also have an Android tablet, which does not leave my side, and I have yet to play a game on it!

The value of a phone does go beyond its operating system.

This is simply a false statement. I am shocked that anyone could have this missguided opinion. I disagree in the strongest possible way.
The main reason that Apple and to a lesser degree Android is so succesfull, is because they have managed to simplify the OS. The reason that BB still has any users in SA, is only because of the low internet cost. When this advantage falls away, everyone chooses iOS at the high end and Android at the low end.
