Star Citizen

Holy cwap - according to this article, 186 million dollars collected in crowd funding.

http://www.mweb.co.za/games/view/tabid/4210/Article/32617/Star-Citizen-launches-a-R342000-DLC-pack.aspx

Using an exchange rate of R12.40 to $1 (it's R12.54 at the moment ito latest I have seen), that means slightly over R2.3 billion .

And, after all these years, and as the article says, not even in proper beta testing phase.

Eish. I'm sorry, but this sounds very problematic to me.

As someone who backed it something like 5 years ago, I've surrendered to the idea that it might never come out and be a good game. Duke nukem forever, baby! It is sad, I was looking forward to an amazing space opera.

If it does work out it'll be an unexpected bonus.

As someone with over R3000 invested in this, I have resigned to the fact that Ill play it when it comes, but not actively following it any longer, Ill get it when its done

Sheeet, my condolences. With R3000 you could have had a large pizza every day for a month and a half. You could have also had diabetes.

Hold on, Star Citizen actually a health service fighting the diabetes ^_^

Lol, i know a guy who is R22K down and also has the same attitude as me, will play it if it comes out XD

The backers remain happy as long as they can see where their money is going and many don't care really how long it takes as long as it has a clear roadmap and gets done to a high quality (I'm in that group).

They have weekly webshows (these are paid for by monthly subscribers) going into extreme details on the game development which I really enjoy as I'm into that kind of stuff.

I wouldn't call myself a "staunch" supporter but definitely a hopeful one, but I only have like $60 in the game so I'm not concerned about losing anything but would really like to see it succeed. I'd say I've already had more than $60 of fun within the (alpha) game to date so I'm pretty happy. Just don't get too political with these types of things, have fun and enjoy it - nobody is forcing you to do anything you don't want to.

I get this. However, I'm unsure where my $75 (and I submitted a $60 AMD coupon) will end up, they have already introduced an subscription model $10-20 monthly which I believe is the Centurion and Imperator plans.

Threads like these are uninspiring,

I'm in the dark, what privileges and access will I have when the game is released?

Currently, they have a buy-to-experience model... when I bought the game, I had access to everything at that time (incl. Squadron 42), now they have added so many new modules and game components that I don't necessarily have access to and I don't even know whether my one-time purchase is still including Squadron 42. I’m not talking about inventory here.

Check your account: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/account/pledges and look under your game package, will have the details there.

As far as I know there are no other separate game modules, there is just SC and SQ42. SC contains the public universe, hangars, arena commander and star marine. SQ42 is only the single player campaign.

Bliksem! What on earth did you pay for?

Thought I'd add something a bit more light-hearted in here :D

I think this will go down as one of the biggest scams in history that was not a ponzi scheme...

Silly way to scam people by spending all the money you get from them by opening 5 development studios across the world and hiring almost 500 employees.

Their operational costs must be insane.

The only reason I see the game going bust is if they run out of funding due to overreaching or mismanagement. Even then Chris Roberts would probably keep on a small team to get something out even if he had to pay for it out of his own pocket.

Sorry dude, but this makes it sound more odd. 5 development studios? 500 people? So, if the game does not come to fruition there are 5 development studios to churn out more money afterwards? And 500 people cannot get a game to beta stage after how many years?

I honestly do not know why you defend this so passionately. I would love this game to come to the fore, but even you are now making excuses i.e. "if they run out of funding due to overreaching or mismanagement"

How TF do you run out of money after more than R2 billion?

I never said that will happen, i said it's the only reason i would think in which it possibly would. It's very very easy to mismanage money with such a large studio.

I'm not "passionately" defending it, I'm just not being pessimistic about it as what i currently see is encouraging. I'm not taking any sides in this discussion, I'm allowed to also change my outlook on it at any time if I wish.

I would really like to see the game evolve and there is nothing else quite like it available now or any other studio that i know of doing anything like it on the same scale.

Feel free to let your negative bias on this make you feel like you should continue engaging in a discussion on a project you don't even like.

Ok. I have said this before (but then, seeing as how much time has elapsed....)

I would love this game to become reality. Elite, Privateer, Wing Commander, Freelancer...I have played all of them. Have you?

Anyway, as for your comment that "there is nothing else quite like it available now", well, that would be true. Then again, this game is not avaialble now either.

And you keep on saying, "It's very very easy to mismanage money with such a large studio."

So, in other words, you saying you know the money has gone down the drain?
