Star Citizen

I only hope that this game will cover subspace communications, ignoring TeamSpeak here, too communicate between contacts on open or closed channels. Those playing the Alpha, is this currently possible?

No in-game voice comms as yet, just chat.

I loved Freelancer, played so many mods back in the day. We used to LAN the game with mods, those days are a long time ago. Hmmm, would love to try Discovery Freelancer on a weekend that I have time. I tried Starpoint Gemini 1/2, though it is very close to Freelancer it did not quite made the cut, however I should had spent more time with SG 2 (and its add-ons).

Those which loved the original Wing Commanders may also try the Wing Commander Saga which is based on the Freespace 2 engine. Freespace 1/2, though mission based, is probably the best space combat simulations ever made. The Wing Commander series on the other hand had a superb story.

WC Saga:

Hats off to the Saga team, they did a great job. It was shortly after I finished Saga that the Star Citizen bomb dropped, so it tickled my space sim itch at just the right time too.

And despite the delays Star Citizen hasn't yet been pushed out the door as a complete, working game.

Lol 2.5 years to complete. Never, the scope sky rocketed after crowed funding, its a very different game compared to the 2 million goal. I think we probably have at least 2 years more to wait.

My estimation is around 2019/2020. FPS (Star Marine) and S42 will systematically roll out, but the PU is going to take some time.

But what will the technology be like then? I am a total ignoramus about shaders and v-synch and such. Does this game not risk losing itself in the backwash of the technology it is being designed for? To state it more clearly - as best I know each generation of GPU's (and maybe CPU's?) offer advanced firmware/software technology.

So while years are spent designing this game to be the best ever on latest tech....when it finally comes out might it not be a wee bit behind the times?

Or will it be forever a catch-up scenario; which seems to be what is being played out here?

My understanding is that there are ways to modify your visuals without completely overhauling your code. So if more advanced shaders and things come out, you can incorporate them with a little effort.

Probably the biggest example of a game advancing with the times is WoW. I know it is not the most amazing game to look at. But when you consider the technology that it was built on. Then have a look at footage/screenshots from WoW Vanilla. Even just looking at some of the in game graphical options. Like reflections and water and grass and such. These are all things that they built on afterwards. The visuals of the game now, compared to Vanilla are like night and day. So I don't really worry about SC falling behind the times too much.

They will probably spend some effort in the last 12 months before official release, on sprucing things up anyway.

SoulTax makes a very valid point about WoW. Tech evolves a helluva lot in 10 years, so even during the development process, you need to lay the foundation for future updates. Star Citizen is planned to have a 10 year lifespan as an MMO according to Chris Roberts, if it proves to be popular enough to sustain itself. Any game that wants to achieve a bit of longevity needs to take a longer term view.

The great thing about the CIG dev team is that their Frankfurt Studio is devoted almost entirely to new engine tech. They have a good number of people on board that used to work for CryTek, and in fact had a hand in writing the CryEngine itself. These are the guys that converted the engine to 64bit, that figured out how to turn 8x8km FPS maps into an unbroken map millions of km across, that implemented the procedural tech shown during the Gamescom demo, etc. They are also constantly working on new ways to implement VFX to optimize performance but at the same time get better visuals, to implement new graphics technologies such as DX12 and Vulkan, and probably a ton of other stuff we don't yet know about.

So no, the game will not be outdated by the time it comes out. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Just to show you guys a cloud mod for no man's sky, I know you don't like the game, but I think it looks pretty sweet.

I get that you like NMS, but why share this here? There's a whole NMS thread for you to talk about NMS.

Well first of all I am not talking about NMS, I am only showing two pictures. Second of all, since NMS was mentioned here I just wanted to show how good it can look graphics wise with a few mods.

1 day left for downloading. Cant wait for my Fiber connection next month, then the 20GB updates will be a breeze.

Infinity fiber is quite cheap now, R549 a month for 10mbps uncapped, goes via the telkom lines. Does your area have Fiber?

Sadly, no. 40mbps VDSL will be the best I can do in the near future.

No need to get defensive. I just don't understand how it's relevant here. If we wanted to see NMS-related stuff we could just go to that thread.

So what is the DL size of the current client? Because I'm really worried about that alleged 100GB+ game size they're talking about. That's like a week or more on a 2mb line if you're downloading almost constantly. :wtf:

2.5 runs a bit smoother for me than 2.4, looks better too.

Grim Hex is pretty cool but they broke the pylon mount on the Aurora now I can't equip any missiles :(
