Starlink tested in the bushveld — 187Mbps when load-shedding kills mobile

South African households whose primary mobile broadband connection goes down during load-shedding or campers who want fast Internet in the bushveld might find investing in a Starlink kit worthwhile.

In the past few weeks, IT Lec, Quick Connect Wireless, and representatives from Cool Ideas have shared their experiences testing SpaceX's Starlink service in South Africa with MyBroadband.

Great report, I like the hard case, and the fact that you gave the power consumption. I'm sure that the weather was great at Pilanesberg during winter, although it does look a bit dry. Need to go back and do another test during spring to see the effects of rainy weather.

I live in the bush myself and ordered and paid for starlink from IT-LEC two weeks ago.. Still hasn’t arrived.

I emailed them today only to find out that there has been yet another delay… No communication from their side about it, I guess it’s for you to keep asking them about it. Latest delay suggests that it might arrive next week Friday, provided there are no more unexpected delays, of course.

There is no load shedding during the day and that phone has full signal of whatever network it was connected to

As for Starlink it does look quite cool and mobile to carry in a back pack, certainly a use for it in SA for bushbabies and hikers, very expensive but at a better price just to watch it find signal itself is worth it

Anyone able to let a smokeping run for a few days, speedtests are short snapshots in time :)

The latency is high likely because there are no nearby earth stations - closest is probably in Ikire, Nigeria.

if you have one nearby ping times average around 60ms.

The only thing currently stopping me to move to a more remote area us the reliance on fiber upload speeds. I need at least 20 down and 20 up.

Yeah. Come to CT and do a test here ----- That would be very interesting.

Had one at sea last month - they don't like heavy fronts but whether that's from spray flying around or the dish flying around or the heavy rain/low cloud/zero vis don't know but service does get sporadic. Normal weather works just fine.
"in motion" during that also tho, standard dish as well.

A ship is a bit of a challenge because it will constantly be going out of alignment, and I am actually surprised that this works at all. This means that it can be used in the fight against maritime piracy, it will enable better sharing of information when out of range of shoreline comms.

If the alignment issue is from the waves, you can use gyroscope stabilizers to mitigate against the motion.
