Johannesburg - Top stars need more protection from referees than they are getting at the Soccer World Cup, Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has complained.

Ronaldo had a frustrating time in his side's opening goalless draw with Ivory Coast in Group G, the Real Madrid star picking up a booking for diving while extending his scoring drought at international level which goes back in competitive games to before the qualifiers.

"I don't understand the decisions of the referees sometimes," said Ronaldo. "They are supposed to protect the best players."

While Ronaldo's comments suggest he believes his reputation for not staying on his feet goes before him, Argentina coach Diego Maradona has also called for referees to watch out for over-enthusiastic defending.

In the build-up to Thursday's match against South Korea, Maradona, who received plenty of kicks in his time annoyed the South Koreans by saying that facing them in a 1986 clash was 'more like taekwondo than football.'

South Korea coach Huh Jung-Moo faced Maradona's men that year on the pitch, picking up a booking.

Huh has told his men to enjoy Thursday's game and insisted his men have no need to resort to dangerous tackles.

"It is up to the referee, but in 1986, when the national Korean team met Argentina at the World Cup, we didn't have a lot of experience," said Huh.

Christiano you are a tosser. Toughen up old lad and pls don't make yourself out to be a "star" if you can't even score a goal for your country in ages.

Your little complaints is starting to annoy everyone even your own Portugues supporters.

LOL
when i read the heading, i though "oh my gosh, is this another green peace action?".

What a little diva. The referees should uphold the rules of the game - nothing more, nothing less.

Funny how Messi - who is titchy small in comparison to Ronaldo - doesn't act like a baby when people target him. Ronaldo is a proper w@nker.

Dunno if you guys watched the CIV vs Portugal match, but Ronaldo was given quite a hiding by the big Africans. In one tackle, had his feet taken out from under him, the the dude squared up to him and bumped him, and he and Ronaldo both got given yellows

As for Messi, I've seen him retaliate a few times Smokey.

Yeah man, of course he's going to complain as bit - I mean he's only human. However, there's a big difference in his approach tot he game and Ronaldo's.

Yeah, but then again, it's easy to remain humble and dignified if you're a football god :)

Not if you're Argentinian. Think Maradonna... :p

Hey, even football gods act like @$$holes when they're on steroids and cocaine..

Enjoy your game? :D

Despite the score, it was an exciting match to watch live, and I got to watch one of my favourite players (Iniesta) playing. The crowd was awesome - lots of Swiss fans - and I thoroughly enjoyed it. More than even the Germany game, if you can believe it.

Heading should read "Referees need more protection" :D
For the rest of the wussy soccer players, for everyones sake, man up a little and stop acting like little girls. You got more than enough security. In fact, maybe if you had less security you'd stop flopping around on the soccer pitch all the time

Soccer should back to good ol days when a scissor hack down would not bring a yellow. Some of these players need to toughen up.

The reason messi thumps ronaldo is because he can ride a challenge/s, the slightest touch on ronaldo and he goes down. He could be as good as messi if he just tried to stay on his feet more. Drogba as well is a big bloody actor but that saurez guy must be the worst i have seen in a long time.

You need to hack messi down, ronaldo you just need the slightest touch.

Another overpaid Diva acting like a sniveling little worm. Star power counts for nothing on a soccer pitch. Just go ask Spain.

And I agree with killadoob. I've seen players dive in situations where they have ahad the upper hand and if they had just stayed on their feet they might have caused problems for the opposition.

Also Messi is a tiny dude who probably grew up getting bullied by bigger players on the pitch which is why he has learned to be a little terrier.

Jeezas, soccer players are such woos-es. Especially the strikers, just look at them and they tumble over clutching ankles or whatever, crying like they've been hit by a freight train. The game needs to flow more not be stopped for every little tap a player receives.
