Start Car Neutral or in GEAR...

Hey Don't get me wrong , I start my car in neutral. Why? cos that's the way I was taught to....

Just wanted to know what you guys do or thought, as my brother starts the car in first gear and just drives off (ie clutch in and go).

Does this have any negative impact on the clutch/thrust bearing etc?

Is it because you drive a Honda?

I start in first with the clutch depressed. I can't see that this would be harmful in any way

If the clutch is in then it wont matter.

I always put the clutch in.

Always start the car in neutral, no specific reason and no idea if it causes damage in gear just how I have always done it. If I park on an incline I will leave it in gear but when I get back in the car I put it in neutral before starting it.

Always leave my car in neutral and start it as such. When leaving home and when leaving work the first gear I change to is reverse anyway.

Doesn't make much of a difference, as it's no different to depressing your foot on the clutch and changing gears. Neutral would probably be the best bet though, just in case you forget to depress the clutch in before changing gears, and happen to forget the handbrake as well.

I don't see how it matters.

In fact if I am not mistaken some cars require the clutch to be in for it to start to prevent the car from jumping forward of it was left in gear.

I was taught to start with the clutch in. And my car requires that I start the car with the clutch in. It's a good and safe practice in my opinion.

Certain new cars make you start in neutral with the clutch in.

Good habit to get into. Starting in neutral with the clutch in reduces drag on the motor and has the added benefit of safety - not jumping the car forward.

All gets back to mechanical sympathy and safety at the same time.
