Ok so occasionally this happens...

1) I start the vehicle
2) Starter motor continues to engage flywheel.
3) I tUrn the key to off and remove it completely.
3) Starter motor continues to engage flywheel, cranking the engine, but obviously not firing due to no power.
4) I remove the wire from the starter motor which comes from the ignition.
5) Still spinning.
6) I turn the key to ON
7) Vehicle starts. Starter motor still engaging flywheel

If I let the vehicle idle for a minute or two, eventually it disengages. I replaced the Solonoid a few months ago, so it's still newish.

Any ideas?

Gracias.

Sounds like the return spring is shot and doesn't retract the starter cog.

But even if the Bendix was stuck, and the ignition was switched off, surely there would be no power to keep turning the engine over. Even with the small ignition wire removed, it still keeps turning the engine over. Damn thing is possessed...

Bendix is engaged, as starter motor still receives signal to turn from the ignition key. Most likely a short in ignition key.

But how can it, when I've physically removed the ignition signal wire from the starter motor whilst the engine is cranking? It continues to turn with no link to the ignition.

It's the probably solenoid. Power from battery go directly to solenoid contacts which supply power to starter motor. Even if you disconnect the ignition wire it will still have power if it's stuck. You can rule out ignition as a problem if the problem is still there when disconnected.

Removing the ignition signal wire does not remove the power from the starter motor- it merely acts as a relay, I think. You have a short somewhere else, or (more likely) as stated previously, the return spring is shot, which doesn't disengage the gear from the flywheel, and I believe, also does not break the contacts (I think it's responsible for both actions).

Correct, the spring is inside the solenoid. It (solenoid) supply power to the starter and engage the gears.

Excellent! Appreciate this. Sounds like we're getting closer to the culprit. I'll take it off and have a look when I have a spare second. I had ruled out the Solonoid, because it is only a few months old, but it was a Suburban Spares special, so you never know.
