Thinking of starting a Boosted WiFi setup within my complex and charge the very minimal fee's. Any tips would be appriciated?

Tell us more about the current setup, what is in place currently? If we need to give tips we would need to know what your plans are...
Or is it a case of you want to share your ADSL connection via Wifi and make them pay for it?

You need an ISP license, IIRC.
Also, there are laws that wifi shouldn't cross another persons' property unless they don't have a problem with it, IIRC.

As the other forumites have stated, there are probably some laws governing this, and if you are a law abiding citizen you should probably apply for a WISP and or ISP licence.

Depending on the size of your complex, and the amount of customers you want to target, licencing fees will most probably diminish any type of profit.

If you not too concerned about the licences and laws, buy a wireless access point (to boost your existing WiFi Signal) and a Mikrotik router (to take care of the networking, and data allowances) and you should be fine.

I know a "friend" that ran a setup like this and it worked like a charm.

Well i come across alot of wireless connections through my property so i am not phased by this matter. But thanks for the heads up.
I am not a Law child in this case as it is for say 10 to 15 users within my complex and alternative connections are scarse.

currently a new idea so nothing is in place. i am at ease with the soft configuration but thanks to TMAN i am now at ease with hard configurations as well. so i shall try it and advise.

it is easy for me to use a fixed line as i am lucky to have line installed from years ago but it is not so lucky for the others.

so i share that link via WiFi and vwalaah. Many Great ideas started with a single thought for many people. and yes i am sure that i am not the only one using this idea.

I would advise getting the following in place if you were to get your setup up and running:

1. Some sort of mechanism to stop neighbor X to share the WiFi password with Neighbor Y and Z. Although not 100% effective you can use MAC adress filtering to control who has access to your network. You can also charge customers per device, and track individual usage.

2. You want some sort of QoS set up, or Firewall rules to block p2p. Alternatively, you would want to limit each customers % of bandwidth available to them at any given time to limit abuse.

3. As with any network you will have users that abuse the WiFi. Rather offer a capped service as apposed to an uncapped service, and have some sort of system in place to monitor usage, and automatically cut users off once they reach their cap.

Taking the above into consideration, you can get a Mikrotik RB750 router to start off with.

I really need a button to move threads to the correct sections in the forum. :) Can Report be used for that? It doesn't really look that way.

Thanks irBosOtter and TMan.

I have all that in place already with a Billion Router and a small Cisco Router i had laying around. i will start off small and grow from there so basically 5 people over a 8Meg Line, Uncapped should be 100's. and see how it goes from there.

need to keep myself occupied after work hours so any other VoIP or telephony ideas shared would be great that i can build from scratch.
