Just to throw it out there...here's what I'm thinking at the moment:

Samsung 42" plasma PS42C450 R6.0k (possibly 50" if the wife relents ;)
Yamaha RX-V467 receiver R5.5k
Paradigm Atom speaker pair R3.3k (sub can wait)
Stands for speakers R1.7k
HD PVR/dish/installation R2.8k
Bluray player (model???) R2.0k ??

Total cost: R21.3k

Costs not included: small cabinet for receiver/bluray/decoder, cables (R2k?)

I like it for what it's worth

A matching Yamaha ?

Not sure if this is still running, but you get a larger amplifier (with OSD), a Yamaha Blu Ray and R500.00 worth of interlinks for R3,500.00 more ... and the BR alone is R4,000.00

wow! that looks like a bargain! thanks for the heads-up :)
According to my budget above I was going to spend R7.5k on receiver + bluray, so this is only R1.5k more :D
do these guys ship to Cape Town though...
think I saw some Yamaha specials at an AudioVision in Cape Town as well...mmmm

I'm sure they ship everywhere.

A few guys over at www.avforums.co.za have bought from them, so they're legit too :)

I've had Onkyo, Yamaha and Marantz - and I really did like the Yamaha. I was looking at that exact deal too (or off special, a smaller Yamaha) - but other things have cropped up

great stuff, I'll investigate

Geez PP ... On one hand you talk about real home theatre enthusiasts, and on the other you mention plasma, half HD and no Blu Ray player :/

Plasma is the choice of enthusiasts.

"Half HD" is misleading, it's 720p, and there is no difference from viewing distance between it and 1080p, according to experts especially your "president of HT", TYR himself.

I did not say no Blu-ray player, I questioned the need for it. Misinterpret much?

What's wrong if there is no Blu-ray player, and one has good quality HD rips loaded on a HD media player that is stacks more versatile in playing tons of other media?

Just get both?

Right.

So when my neighbour builds his dedicated HT room to make a mini cinema, I'll tell him to go for a C450, Sony STR500 and a Mede8tor ...

Precisely - if his budget is R11,500.00 (and has access to BR ripz).

Glad you've learnt something about entry level HT!

I thought some people were complaining Yamaha's power supplies in their more recent models were not as beefy as the competition or as they once were.

Only if you're sitting too far from the display.

The onkyo x08 range is already replaced in the UK so we should get it soon. Keep a look out for clearance on what is an awesome range.
Take2.co.za also had some very good deals if you browse the US part of it.
