Starting from scratch...AV setup

You really need a Blu-ray player?

What about a HD media player like the Mede8er? Or aren't you into HD rips etc.?

If you need a Blu-ray player, what about a PS3? :p

Well, I figure if you have a TV that does HD, you might as well use it! We rent the odd dvd, so hopefully we can start to rent blurays instead. Not really into HD rips...don't have the bandwidth/speed for that. Something like the mede8er will def be useful as well, so might actually get that before I get a bluray player. Except if I go for the yamaha combo special Dolby has linked.
On the PS3....yeah, in my dreams ;) def a no-no with my better half

"Half HD" is misleading, it's 720p, and there is no difference from viewing distance between it and 1080p, according to experts especially your "president of HT", TYR himself.

Wanna bet? My screen size isn't on that graph... and I can CLEARLY see the difference between 720 and 1080p

158" diagonal. 13 feet seating position. :p

Although - I can also see the difference on my 46" LCD - but only in dark scenes.

:D

Wonder why that would be?

According to the chart, maybe you only notice it in dark scenes, so you aren't getting the "full benefit". :p

13 feet is within the THX recommended distance so you should see a difference. Same applies to 46" or even 32" when sitting at the recommended difference.
