Starting out Bike Advice

And to anyone looking at riding. Don't be embarrassed to go to a beginner class. It's your life you're looking out for. They will teach you from how to turn the bike on, change gears, tips to not drop it, cornering, swerving to avoid obstacles etc.

The intermediate course builds on the more advanced skills. Its costly but its better to learn from pros than by yourself. I've had scooters my whole life but I will go on all the courses too. Now if only they would promote me at work so I can can get the bike dammit.

Now that's a weird statement! You mean you can't die on a scooter? I would think there is more reason to take a course with a scooter! I saw a 125 Vuka man down at an Intersection. They are similar to a scooter.

What I'm saying is that I know how to ride 2 wheels on the road, not that scooters are less dangerous. I've just never been on a course and since I haven't owned anything with 2 wheels in a while I'm going on the courses to re-learn all the basics and some defensive driving.

I don't know how you got "can't die on a scooter" from that.
 
I haven't read the whole thread, so sorry if this has been mentioned before, but a supermotard could be a good first bike. Something like the DRZ or similar.
They have loads of power, not to fast, and it won't be expensive when you fall :P

There was an article on 2wheels a local tv show about a women who wanted, saved up, and got her Buell which is a custom Harley-Davidson they are normally 1200cc and up.
