Starting with Linux - Ubuntu

I know you are just starting out, but have a look at KDE rather than Gnome as your window manager - its just better to do everyday tasks with it.

my first problems to overcome are getting it to connect using a sentech modem and to get the DVD drive to play DVDs (only plays CDs)

Anyone maybe know how to get DVD's and Music to work properly in Ubuntu? I cant seem to get it working.

1 url www.freebsd.org :P

btw, if you want live help with Ubuntu or any other distro & most open source programs, or the ubuntu community forums

irc.freenode.org #ubuntu

Thought i'd finally take a look @ Ubuntu, i generally stick with SuSE and Fedora.

Having gone through the installation i am sorely disappointed at the Installation GUI, for normal non system users it's not pretty, does not have an auto-configure partition tool or Auto Grub loader.

Make it pretty, make it easy and the end users will brave the new world :D

@mccrack, there are certainly a few things missing, but comparing the ubuntu installation against something like Redhat, especially on a notebook, it works like a charm.

The link I mentioned in my first post was extremely helpful for the install

Still without connection. The system sees the modem but no connection occuring

That's also one of my gripes with UnSuitaBle modems and Linux... wish Mark will light a fire under all those UnSuitaBle modem drivers... and get these to work under linux as well...

This is one of the biggest drawbacks of Linux, that most UnSuitaBle modems are not supported out of the box.

Anyway, familiarize yourself with Ubuntu, then try different Linux distros for a full experience.

Regards

TU

Thats the gripe I have with Ubuntu....NO Sentech modem driver
