Starting WoW: not the best idea.

Hey guys :)

Unfortunately I have a few not-so-nice words about WoW to give you today. Its an opinion of mine I felt I should share after going through this and other SA forums and looking at the mass of people beginning/recently begun WoW, and I think I've spent enough time on the game to justify this opinion.

If you're new to WoW, or considering starting, possibly consider staying away. The game has extended to the point where its ultra complicated, a large portion of the content you'll be leveling through is obsolete, and when you finally get to the 'end game' you may find the game suddenly very unattractive and more of a chore/time-consumer than you had anticipated when you purchased it and heard all of the nice things about it.

I'm not trying to muddy the water, or turn people off, evidently people are still enjoying the game or 10 million players are all wasting their time. But truthfully after spending four years playing the game, my only wish is to get those four years back.

Sorry for bringing in a bad vibe, and I know I won't get much (any?) support for this since this is a WoW forum, and not an anti-WoW forum, but I think people deserve to hear both sides of the story seeing as this game is not just a game but often becomes a lifestyle, whether you plan on it or not.

Anyway, if you are enjoying it and having a good time, go for it. Just keep this somewhere in the back of your mind, so that when you're faced with some decision-making, you at least have ammo both ways.
 
I dont necessarily disagree with you, but dont give over your kind of opinion as fact. I have started leveling a new char and have done every (obsolete in your words) instance and have not had any trouble finding groups. Some people play the game to experience it, and other people see the leveling process as just the means to reach the end. I think you approached the game a different way than myself, which is why I am enjoying it.
 
frankly.. if you are the kind of person who wastes his time on a game its not blizzard's fault.
If i count the hours i`ve played computer games it will also add on to years, and the only mmo i`ve touched is guildwars factions in which i played through the campaign.. +- 80 hours.
 
2 quick points.

a. Anyone starting so late in the game hoping to raid is going to play catch up. Anyone starting the game for the game will have lotsa fun.

b. Game is a waste of time.....Please dont tell me that if u not playing wow u not playing something else. The 2 hours a day we play wow would otherwise be spent on Dota, Crysis, Other MMORPG....we just choose this one over the other games.

I can completely relate since I used to play games ALL THE TIME while in high school.

At that stage I couldn't see anything wrong with it - was enjoying myself.
Then, one day, it just dawned on me. What am I achieving here? Stopped playing so much (I do still play occasionally, all in moderation). And as one that's been there I also wish I could have all that time back.

I don't think a super addict can ever be convinced to stop playing. It has to hit you in the face that using up 90% of your time to play inside a make believe world is fun, but if you keep doing it going to be old with very little to show for your life. You have to spend time in real life too to gain real life XP and babies :P
 
Brenden_E's reply fits with what I'm trying to say; and its also important to look at this in a WoW sense. The gamer who spends a lot of time playing games, is at least having fun, and usually playing a variety of games whereas the WoW player (generally) spends the majority of his/her time in Azeroth, playing a game that essentially becomes redundant in so many areas.

I could spend hours explaining each facet of the game inwhich this occurs, but I've done this so many times when trying to argue the point, that its only tired me out and frequently amounted to nothing.

A quick example is the extreme amount of grinding you have to undertake at max level. I remember grinding heroic instances hours on end just to get badges in order to upgrade epic X to epic Y. Getting a group together and running it for the first, second, and third time was fun - but by the twentieth run it isn't.

Other end game activities, such as raiding, are fun, but end up requiring a lot of extra work on the side which isn't; including copius amounts of grinding.

Frankly a large amount of the time you'll spend in the game is doing things that aren't directly enjoyable. They may eventually result in the small triumph of getting a nice title or new item, but is that small moment of fleeting joy really worth the hours of tedious grinding? Games are meant to entertain you. What a lot of people find in WoW, instead, is a career. Look for this where you should have been looking in the first place: the real world.

I can understand finding your niche where you can enjoy the game without committing to it, as dakeyras describes:

Then I can see the benefit of playing World of Warcraft. But coming from a guy who has played it since it was released, all roads eventually lead to the end game, which is where the play dynamic suddenly swings up several levels and you are forced to adapt to a much more tedious game.

Anyway I don't mean to vent :p I've vented in the past and I'd hope its out of my system by now. Its just nice to have this kind of opinion avaliable to people who may be considering starting a game like WoW.

LOL. I assume you live in Wow? Chill dude he's only giving his opinion which he is free to do. I fear MMO because they can be addictive and years can go by and in the end you realize it's all been for nothing :( So I would agree with OP.
 
What are you on about?
You have burned out after 4 years, and now it's the game's fault? I have been playing for over 4 years now (yea been part of the US alpha testing team). And if anything the Grinding have been reduced quite significantly.
A couple of weeks into WOTLK and I am already exalted with almost all the new factions... Grinding rep were never this easy with you able to decide what instance you want to run and what tabard to wear.

Have most of the new epic rewards from heroics and badges. I am raiding 25 man Nax 3 days a week, have cleared the other 2 25 man dungeons.
If anything the game have opened up a LOT for the casual gamers and almost anyone can now raid and do well.

The game is a Time sink, that is for sure. But so is any other form of entertainment. Before I started playing wow, I was watching TV for 4-5 hours a day...

Keep your crappy thoughts about wow to yourself dont post them on a wow forum.

blizzard screwed up WOW with the first expansion and did an even worse job with the second ......

Sold my account, best thing i ever did, and turned a nice profit as well ...

And I forsee alot of extra raids being patched in ;) We have plenty of time to make use of this new exp :). I still have plenty of toons to level :o
 
I agree with OP, seriously what is the point of all the grinding for influence just to get Exalted.

Please some one explain to me how that can possibly be fun?
Does anyone find it fun at all?
If not then why the hell do it, WoW is not a job.

To me it's fun :p

I get home sort my things then log into WoW (Everyone else watches TV) I grind rep as it passes the time, I do instances/Heroics/Raids cos it's something fun to do instead of watching TV.

I still go out some saturdays if there is something on some where or the wife wants to go do something.

WoW is just my replacement for watching TV, nothing more nothing less.

And I'm having fun doing so.
