Have you played MMO's before wow were out? Can you propose a different way of keeping people interested in a game? Reputations were put in there for casual gamers that did not want to spend hours raiding to get gear, but quest and gain reputation on their own time for some gear rewards. It is really up to you if you want to grind reputation or not... I had almost no exalted reputations before WOTLK on my hunter and still had no issues with enjoying the end game (raided sunwell etc.)
(added that I did not actively grinded rep, I got exalted with a few through raiding)
 
Well, I kinda agre with the OP, but I agree with the others here as well. It is a time sink, but so is everything you do outside of working or caring for your family. Watching 90 minutes of rugby is a time sink. Spending 3 hours at a pub is both a time sink and a money sink (of note). Playing Fallout 3 for 4 hours non stop is a time sink. Watching Naruto is a time sink (oh boy is THAT a time sink).

Humans need time sinks, to do something brain-dead for x hours every day to de-tune from the 8, 10, 12 or more hours we spend 'wasting time' at our job or whatever. All work and no play... same is true of the reverse of course.

I don't regret my 3-odd years playing WoW. I find myself playing less of it, again, but that's only because I'm enjoying other time sinks, currently. Might come back to WoW more permnently. Might never boot up the game again. Who knows.What I HAVE realised is that obsession is bad, and that you're supposed to be relaxing in your time sink offtime rather than stressing anew. All that pressure to level, pressure to farm, pressure to perform in raids, pressure to get 1850 rating? THAT's the part of the game I won't miss at all. If I play WoW again, I'l ldo it the same way I'd approach watching a TV show or playing some other game. A few hours, no pressure, no 'just 1 more level, just 1k more honour'. That's how the obsession starts.
 
Not an invalid statement at all,though disparaging comments to get people not to try it out is a bit selfish in itself

Everybody grows up at some stage and different things matter and entertain at those stages. Because alcohol causes 40year old men to beat their wives and 20year olds to smash into walls doesn't mean it isn't worth it to somebody who uses it as a social crutch or an enabler.

I used to watch loads of TV,then I found the internet and IRC and spent days there,then gaming started becoming popular,then women

All of these I've vented years and years of time on and at the end we don't have much to show for anything,but then again maybe we're happy with that little bit that we get.

That little achievement or title,shiny new epic,mount,or even just meeting interesting people from places far far away is fleeting,but what isn't really :)
 
In all fairness, looking at todays market and the variety of mmo's out there, if I was just starting out today I really would think twice about starting with WoW. It's a 4 year old game, you can dress it up however you like, it's starting to really show it's age. Even with Blizzard's magnificent texture work and set design, I really can't help but notice it's like putting lipstick on a pig. I'm not disparaging the game, it's still the best overall experience and particularly pve experience out there. But i really am much more excited about the prospect of The Old Republic or Star Trek Online or SG:Worlds or Aion or Darkfall, than raiding Naxx/whatever for another x years. And it would be a shame for noobs to rob themselves of these experiences and instead be sucked into the crack habit that WoW is.

i hope star trek isn't a disappointment like city of heroes was.

OP spent 4 years playing WoW, now that the game is feeling a little bland to him, suddenly he feels that it's a waste of time and feels compelled to warn others who may think about playing it :rolleyes:

To each his own I say. Like others have pointed out, everything in life are time sinks, even your job. Though it is a life necessity for most it is still not for all, since those who can afford not to work, simply don't. Some folks enjoy watching TV for hours, others go out and party with their buddies, play pool, catch a tan, etc. All of these things we do simply to pass time, but we as individuals choose what we enjoy doing.

For me it's not WoW specific (though for now it is.) I have been playing games for 25 years and still enjoy it very much. From that first time I played an arcade game in a shop all those years ago, gaming still fuels my imagination. I don't do it as a chore.

Currently I am doing old quests I missed while leveling and actually completing achievements. Why you may ask? Because I am a completionist, that is what I enjoy doing. I don't do things or rush to max level under pressure or feel like I have to push myself to meet raid schedules. What ever I do it is because I want to.

One day when I am 70 years old, will I look back and feel I wasted my life away because of gaming? No, why should I? What I did with my time, I enjoyed. Would you be able to say the same?

Was refering to CSS which I also play. We play online games cause they are fun and keep us entertained. I am tired of ppl bashing wow when most online games are the same.

Been playing for 3 years now and have had times when it was boring as hell. But it doesnt last long, a couple of days and I am back at it.

WOTLK is better than the previous expansion i think, and am working hard on getting my rogue geared. 4 epics so far, woot offhand sword only set me back 2k lol.

I agree with you 100%

I also do get tired of it some times. I switch it off and leave it for a week or 2 then I'm hungry for playing again which is fun :)

Since the new EXP hit I haven't been borred for one second :o I love the new EXP and I think it has plenty of potential. I can forsee them patching in a raid every 3 months or so to keep the people happy. The way they patched in Sunwell and M'Terrace was a test run I think. It would be a great way of keeping people entertained for the full duration till the next EXP in 2 or 3 years.

Naxx is not the last raid for a very very long time ;)

There is already rumours about a new raid being put in the game in the next month or so :) /can't wait

WoW is really a fun thing to do.. i play wow after work or even at work (sometimes :P) to relive stress despite being killed. It's because i get to chat with friends and meet people from different walks of life. Do you find your job stress free? Can you meet people from different walks of life through your job? :P
 
Speaking of new raids...

I _REALLY_ hope they bring out something unfathomably awesome for Grim Batol!

It seems like such a waste that there are endless lvl 60+ dragonkin mobs guarding a walkway through various stages with big gates etc. only to end up in front of a sealed off tomb entrance to the city of Grim Batol.

It has a big history in the Warcraft Lore and it's a crying shame that it's not included in WoW.

I'd love for this to be the new scholomance/karazhan ...

Agree with you ... it is the fact that you collaborate with others to solve problems that brings me back to the game.

I agree that the grind isn't ideal but it works for me as I find it an ideal way to shut-off after a long day. Grinding is equivalent to playing Solataire ... with friends ... with the chance that someone will sneak up behind you and smack you on the head (if you play on a pvp server) :D

And to the OP .... find balance in your life. As my father always used to say "everything in moderation"
 
Must say my main enjoyment is steamrolling the hunters and dks DPS into a puddle in Naxx And Maly on my little blue war,find the little things that make it worth it to you ;)
 
well, the number of low levels(1-20) on my realm tell me that a lot of people are still happy to grind all the way. Obviously some will not like it. This could also be some lvl80 raiders hiding out on an alt to just chill out keep a low profile :)

If you start on a established server it will feel worse because you see so many way ahead of you.

Start on one of the newer servers. It will be easier getting groups. And choose a guild who are roughly at the same level of "casualness" or "hardcoreness" as you :) Choosing a guild who currently actively raiding lvl 80 is probably the worst possible thing a newbie can do.

Its the "Multiplayer" in the "MMO" which makes leveling more fun. While you can solo all the way, this is not to everyones liking.

Well i guess i have already built a relationship with my guildies and other friends in playing online games that going into chatrooms :P
 
Lets see, there's the 80 pally, the 71 druid, 70 hunter, 59 DK, 35 mage, 30 shammy, and what am I playing most (as Option will verify :-P). My spanking new 25 warlock :D

There is still awesome amounts of fun in lvling a new class... I like the fact that u grow into it and learning the new spells and stuff. Plus the enjoyment factor of /w my buddies and going "Gief BOOST in DM/stocks/gnome" and have them go ballistic, its priceless!

The only sucky part is lack of mount, but its not far off anymore :D

and +100 abt friends, I have made some awesome buddies :D
